What This Means For Rick And Morty
The Adult Swim Show Will Hit Several Major Milestones
In of number of seasons, this renewal has already guaranteed that Rick and Morty will race up the chart of the longest-running American animated shows of all time. While there are other ongoing shows that will keep producing new seasons in the meantime, it will outrun shows including Adventure Time, Regular Show, Beavis and Butt-Head, and Rugrats to become roughly the 15th longest-running animated show and the 11th longest-running adult animated show in American history. This massive renewal also proves that the show has survived the absence of co-creator Justin Roiland, who was fired from the show in the wake of allegations of domestic abuse. Roiland also voiced both Rick and Morty and was replaced by Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden respectively in season 7. While this move surrounded the new season in controversy, its viewership was clearly strong enough to earn Adult Swim's faith that the show will continue to be a success through the end of the decade.
Our Take On The Rick And Morty Renewal
This Long-Term Commitment Proves The Show's Popularity
It seems slightly premature to promise five additional seasons after Rick and Morty season 7, committing to another half-decade of the show's run. However, this move cements the fact that the show is one of the defining adult animated series of the new era. Its extended run, and potential future longevity, will allow it to stand more clearly alongside iconic shows such as The Simpsons and Family Guy, better highlighting its prominent place in the animation ecosystem.
