Rick and Morty are no strangers to traveling the multiverse, as Rick’s portal gun can bring them to any reality they want in an instant. While there is no limit to their multiversal adventures, there is, however, to the amount of times they can completely uproot their lives and move to a different universe full-time, and one comic confirms that they’ve used them all up.
The first time fans saw Rick and Morty leave their original universe and inhabit a similar, alternate one was in season 1, episode 6, “Rick Potion #9”. In the episode, Rick and Morty’s indifference/incompetence caused everyone in the world to turn into mutated monsters referred to as ‘Cronenbergs’. Given the planetary extent of the damage, Rick and Morty abandon everything (including Morty’s original Beth, Jerry, and Summer), and move to a new reality. Afterward, Rick tells Morty that this isn’t something they can do very often, and can only move realities three or four more times, tops. As the series progressed, fans saw Rick and Morty go to different dimensions two more times: when Morty got the attention of the squirrels, and after Mr. Frundles was unleashed upon the Earth. Now, it’s been revealed that there are two more instances that fans of the show haven’t seen.
Rick & Morty Seemingly Exhausted Their Universe-Hopping Limit
In Rick and Morty #3 by Alex Firer and Fred C. Stresing, Rick and Morty are in the middle of their final showdown with an evil genius version of Mr. Goldenfold (Morty’s math teacher) to decide the fate of the world. This alternate Mr. Goldenfold hails from his own Central Finite Curve where Mr. Goldenfolds are the smartest in their manufactured multiverse, and Ricks are just ‘insignificant’ math teachers. During Rick C-137’s battle with the smart Mr. Goldenfold, Mr. Goldenfold references the number of times Rick and Morty abandoned their worlds for a new one anytime there was trouble. While Mr. Goldenfold mentions the times fans already knew about, he also references two other times Rick and Morty moved realities that weren’t shown on TV: the ‘spit floods’ and ‘the time the Earth got too sexy and Rick broke its heart’.
While these instances weren’t shown, the mere fact that they happened means only one thing: Rick and Morty are done hopping realities. With the addition of these two dimension-changes, Rick and Morty have reached their limit of ‘three to four more times’. This puts Rick and Morty in an interesting position in of their character development, as they are now forced to face any problems they may encounter head-on and protect their home rather than simply abandon it for another. If something else happens to their current world–which, as it stands, is the one where ‘parmesan’ is pronounced annoyingly–then Rick and Morty have to stay and face the proverbial music, since they already moved universes as many times as the series narrative will allow.
With that being said, the truth of the matter is that there really is no limit to what Rick and Morty can do should they need to do it. Sure, Rick said back in season 1 that they can’t move universes regularly, and even went so far as to establish a numerical limit, but that can easily be retconned. In truth, the ‘three to four’ limit was probably just a lie, and won’t really mean anything the next time the two need to make a jump. However, that still doesn’t lessen the significance of the information given in this issue, as it confirms that Rick and Morty officially changed dimensions twice more than fans saw on TV.
