Rick and Morty showrunner Scott Marder confirms that Rick Prime will definitely return in the future. Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, Rick and Morty season 1 premiered on Adult Swim in 2013, and the adult animated sci-fi series quickly became a hit. Rick and Morty follows its title characters, a cynical mad scientist and his anxious grandson, as they travel through the multiverse and encounter alternate versions of themselves and their family. Although Rick and Morty has introduced many Ricks over its nearly decade-long run, one critical version is Rick Prime, an evil version who was last seen in the season 6 premiere, "Solaricks".
Rick Prime's recent appearance raised whether the antagonistic Rick would pop up in the show again, and now Rick and Morty showrunner Scott Marder reveals the answer. While talking withRick and Morty season 6. Check out Marder's statement below:
"I can't say when, but you'll definitely see him again."
How Rick Prime Changes Rick & Morty
Rick Prime brings some major change to Rick and Morty even though the character has only appeared in a handful of episodes, including "The Rickshank Rickdemption" season 3 and "Rickmurai Jack" in season 5. Season 6's "Solaricks" gave viewers their first true introduction to Rick Prime outside a flashback, but Rick and Morty has been setting up Rick Prime to be a major antagonist for several seasons already. Coming into season 6, long-time viewers will know that Rick Prime is the reason the main Rick, Rick C-137, first began to travel dimensions because Rick Prime killed the other's wife and daughter in order to push him to give up his attachments. This alone makes Rick Prime a crucial character, but "Solaricks" added more signs that Rick Prime is the next big bad.
Throughout Rick and Morty seasons 1 through 5, Rick C-137 has been slowly shedding some of his nihilistic narcissist persona as he traveled with Morty, even though this persona still causes trouble for the pair. Still, Rick has truly come to value his family above himself as proven when Morty manages to convince him not to attack Rick Prime in "Solaricks." Rick Prime may test these positive traits in Rick C-137 because his cruel and self-centered behavior isn't just an act and his relation to Morty as his biological grandfather could threaten all the progress Rick's made.
It hasn't been revealed yet what Rick Prime's end goal is, but his recent brush past Rick and Morty will add extra tension to the show until he appears again. While Marder's words confirm Rick Prime's return, they don't guarantee viewers will see him soon. In addition to the last six episodes in season 6, Rick Prime could return in Rick and Morty season 7 or season 8, which is currently being written. What is certain is that Rick Prime's plans mean big changes for Rick and Morty.
