The Rick and Morty left fans with a lot of questions: What will happen to Earth now that it is under the control of the Galactic Federation? What will become of Rick now that he's in the outer space equivalent of a supermax prison? Will Mr. Poopy Butthole be able to kick his painkiller addiction? The biggest question of all, though, was when the show would actually return.

Mr. Poopy Butthole's 2016 Magic City Comic-Con that they were "targeting around the end of this year" for season 3 to hit the air, and that it would contain 14 episodes, up from 10 episodes in season 2. Now fans can see a brief glimpse of what's in store when the show returns.

Adult Swim has posted a teaser video from the San Diego Comic-Con with animatics from season 3, and it does not look like Rick and Morty will be getting any less weird in its new season. The clip features what appears to be Rick in some sort of insectoid form battling rats both for survival and for parts with which to enhance himself. Even in rough sketch form, the violence in the scene is pretty gruesome.

Rick and Morty was co-created by How I Met Your Mother's Sarah Chalke.

With the future of a free Earth hanging in the balance and Rick in a seemingly inescapable predicament, hopefully season 3 of Rick and Morty will start off where the previous season left off and resolve all of its unanswered questions. Either way, one thing is clear: some rats are going to get seriously hurt.

Screen Rant will have more details on Rick and Morty season 3 as they are made available.
