Summary

  • The season 7 finale of Rick and Morty has a disconcerting post-credits scene involving Mr. Poopybutthole replacing another version of himself.
  • The scene suggests that Mr. Poopybutthole is not who viewers thought he was and will be explored in later seasons.
  • The future direction of the story after the post-credits scene is unclear, but it is clear that Mr. Poopybutthole is unwell.

Rick and Morty executive producer Steve Levy has explained the season 7 finale's disconcerting post-credits scene, and what it means for a key character going forward. The final minutes of the show's latest season saw Mr. Poopybutthole use Rick's portal gun to murder a happier version of himself in the multiverse and takes over his other self's happy life.

Speaking with Rick and Morty season 7's ending and its shocking post-credits scene. The executive producer does confirm Mr. Poopybutthole isn't who viewers thought he was, something that will be explored in later seasons. Check out what Levy had to say below:

I’m not sure where we’re going to take that story just yet. But it’s clear that Mr. Poopy Butthole has a screw loose and is very unwell. He’s not the hero we all thought he was at one point.

What Will Mr. Poopybutthole Do In Rick & Morty Season 8?

Mr. Poopybutthole has often appeared in the post-credits scenes of season finales, breaking the fourth wall to tease the events of the following season. However, things took a turn for his character in season 7, episode 1, “How Poopy Got His Poop Back,” where it was revealed he'd lost his job and family after Beth shot him in season 2. The season 7 finale follows up on his storyline, revealing the lengths he's willing to go to get his family back.

There's no doubt the precarious new situation will be further developed in Rick and Morty season 8. Since he stole Rick's portal gun to replace the alternate version of himself, the show's main duo may go after him to get the device back. Doing so, they'll likely learn about what he's done to the alternate version of himself, leading to an episode that resolves the story.

However, it's unclear if Mr. Poopybutthole's appearances in the show will be impacted by his new story. The character has become a staple of the show for breaking the fourth wall, but all that could change if a future episode sees him going against the series' main pair. No matter how Rick and Morty handle his future, though, it's clear his motivations will have a major impact on future events in the show.
