While little is known about the plot of Rick and Morty season 7, there are a handful of major unanswered questions that the series needs to address in this outing. For years, Adult Swim’s sleeper hit Rick and Morty got away with avoiding thorny questions about the show’s lore and canon. This was the result of a concerted effort from the show’s writers and creators, which was often referenced in Rick and Morty’s meta-jokes. In the Rick and Morty season 5 premiere, “Mort Dinner Rick Andre,” Rick cut off his nemesis Mr. Nimbus mid-sentence since he didn’t want him to establish his canonical backstory.
However, this approach could not last forever. One of Rick and Morty’s oldest rules was that the series would only reference its “Big Story,” the overarching narrative of the series, once a season. However, in the season 5 finale, “Rickmurai Jack,” Rick and Morty explained Rick’s backstory, Evil Morty’s plan, and the dark reality behind the show’s multiverse in quick succession. These revelations mean that Rick and Morty season 7 can’t simply ignore the show’s canon, although season 6 did attempt to do this with a string of inconsequential standalone stories that didn't mention the main storyline. Unlike season 6, Rick and Morty season 7 must address this plot.
8 Will Rick Finally Hunt Down Rick Prime?
Rick’s attempt to hunt down Rick Prime, the version of himself who murdered his family, lingers in the background of every Rick and Morty season 6 episode. As the Smith family went on another silly adventure involving a rebellious Night Family or Jerry almost having sex with his mother, the question of when Rick and Morty will get back to Rick’s quest loomed large. Rick and Morty season 7 can’t repeat season 6’s biggest mistake by focusing only one episode on this plot. Now that viewers know about Rick Prime’s crimes and Rick’s desperate desire to track him down, this storyline needs some form of closure.
Rick and Morty season 7 needs to focus on Rick’s hunt for his enemy and his attempts to get revenge. Whether or not Rick ever captures Rick Prime, this plot can’t simply be ignored for another season in favor of standalone stories. Rick and Morty season 5 artlessly jumped between stories that contributed to the show’s canon and sillier adventures, but the outing at least featured more than one episode which touched on this plot. This might have made the much-hated “Rickdependence Spray” seem sillier in contrast, but it still made season 5’s finale one of Rick and Morty’s best episodes. Season 7 must do the same.
7 What Happened To Evil Morty?
While Rick’s attempts to track down Rick Prime are the driving force of Rick and Morty season 7’s “Big Story,” they are not the only major concern in the show’s lingering canon mysteries. Evil Morty didn’t die in Rick and Morty’s season 5 finale, with the series pointedly depicting him escaping the wreckage of the Citadel as it exploded. He may no longer be a villain since Evil Morty claimed all he ever wanted was to expose Rick’s evils and break the system that kept him in power. However, the Central Finite Curve’s restoration midway through Rick and Morty season 6 might have made Evil Morty even angrier.
6 Will Birdperson and Rick Reignite Their Friendship?
Rick and Birdperson’s fraught friendship sustained a moving episode in season 5, episode 8, “Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort.” However, this bittersweet outing ended with Rick and Birdperson departing on a sour note. Of all the Rick and Morty characters who could return in season 7, Birdperson seems like the best candidate. He has unfinished business with Rick and the pair shared a great friendship that got them through the Battle of Blood Ridge, so it would be a shame if their story ended on a downbeat note.
5 Is Beth (and Space Beth) and Jerry’s Relationship Okay?
Beth and Jerry went through a divorce in the early seasons of Rick and Morty, but both characters appeared to sincerely work on their flaws since then. Their eventual reunion was sweet but Rick and Morty season 6 made it clear that there are some major issues with their relationship. Beth’s affair with her own clone Space Beth briefly seemed like it could jeopardize their marriage, although that plot ended better than expected for everyone involved. Despite that rare win for the pair, Rick and Morty season 7 must still check in on Morty’s unstable but well-meaning parents.
4 What Happened To Morty’s Love Life?
On the topic of tumultuous love lives, Morty’s love interests paint a bleak image of the show’s hero. Throughout the early seasons of Rick and Morty, Morty only fell in love to facilitate the show’s plots and his relationships never amounted to more than childish infatuation. However, season 5 episodes involving his longtime crush Jessica and short-lived girlfriend Planetina made it look like Morty was growing and maturing in his attitude toward girls and dating. This led nowhere in Rick and Morty season 6, wherein Morty’s love life was once again forgotten. Rick and Morty season 7 should give the character a more promising future in this department.
3 How Will Justin Roiland's Rick & Morty Roles Be Recast?
Justin Roiland was fired from Rick and Morty in January 2023 when domestic violence allegations against the actor surfaced. While Roiland’s other show Solar Opposites mocked his exit, that series only relied on Roiland for one major voice role. In contrast, Roiland played both Rick and Morty in every episode of the show so far so Rick and Morty season 7 will have to recast both of these parts and explain the new voices of the show’s lead characters.
2 Is Morty Even In School Any More?
Morty’s misadventures in school played a pretty big role throughout Rick and Morty seasons 1 and 2. One of the show’s first adventures saw Rick invade his principal’s dreams in an attempt to change his grades, while another classic outing dealt with an infestation of vampires in his high school. However, in later seasons, the series completely avoided this setting. Rick and Morty season 7 should bring back Morty’s school stories, as this takes narrative pressure off Rick’s story and offers Morty a lead role for a change of pace.
1 What Role Will Summer Play In Season 7?
Summer had surprisingly substantial roles in Rick and Morty season 6, episode 2, “Rick: A Mort Well Lived,” and episode 4, “Night Family.” However, she was otherwise a non-entity in season 6 and her life outside of Rick and Morty’s adventures hasn’t been addressed in years. One standout episode in season 4 focused on Summer tagging along with Rick and Morty and reshaping their intergalactic adventures as a result, but the series hasn’t revisited this promising dynamic since. With Rick and Morty season 7 recasting the show’s heroes, there is no better time for the series to bring Summer into the foreground.
