Fans of Rick and Morty who are already clamoring for more squanchy content after its Season 5 just wrapped up should be pleased to hear that an spin-off prequel comic titled Rick and Morty: Infinity Hour, a clear parody of Star Wars, is set to debut in March of this year. The 4-part series will take place in Rick's past, following him as he becomes an Intergalactic Freedom Fighter fighting against the tyrannical Galactic Federation. Sound familiar?

Rick and Morty are no stranger to parodies, particularly homages to classic Sci-Fi movies, and this comic will be released in a line of parody comics from Oni Press including Hericktics of Rick (spoofing Dune) and Morty's Run (spoofing Logan's Run). In the past, Rick and Morty have parodied movies such as Terminator and The Matrix and have made some pretty clear nods to Star Wars as well, so it is about time that they released a full Star Wars parody, especially since the Star Wars franchise has seen a recent boost in popularity based on its own wide range of newly released comics. As opposed to other Rick and Morty stories, which usually feature the ever-intoxicated Rick and his shaky-voiced grandson Morty, Infinity Hour will instead explore a secretive part of Rick's past.

While Oni Press has not released much information about Infinity Hour, the official synopsis reveals:

"Rick has always known he was destined for greater things but when that greater thing calls, will he be ready to answer? In the four-issue miniseries Rick and Morty: Infinity Hour, Rick is recruited to a galactic rebellion, forming a bond with a ragtag group of freedom fighters, mystics, and mercenaries. Can this team of would-be heroes overthrow the Galactic Federation?"

Rick and Morty: Infinity Hour—with writing by Mags Visaggio (Vagrant Queen, Kim & Kim), art by Marc Ellerby (Doctor Who, Rick and Morty), and coloring by Leonardo Ito (Rick and Morty Vs. D&D, Batman: Gotham Under Siege)—may give fans a closer glimpse at Rick's estranged relationship with Beth's mother and his wife, Diane Sanchez, as she is prominently featured on the cover next to a young Rick. There is also always more to be explored about Rick's antigovernmental attitude towards the controlling Galactic Federation, and this story might explain in even more detail just why Rick hates the Federation so much.

Rick and Morty Infinity Hour Star Wars Parody Comic

Rick and Morty Infinity Hour Star Wars Parody Comic Jedi Variant Cover

Judging by both released covers for Infinity Hour young Rick will be working alongside his long-time friend Birdperson and a creature who resembles Glootie. Glootie was Rick's former intern and member of the Monogatron species, first introduced in Rick and Morty: Issue 52 and then focused on in the Season 4 episode "The Old Man and the Seat." The comic's variant cover seems to be positioning Rick as Han Solo and the Monogatron as Chewbacca. One of the latest Rick and Morty comic series, Rick and Morty: Mr. Nimbus focused on the backstory of Rick's recently established long-time nemesis, the Aquaman-esque Mr. Nimbus. It was narrated by Time God Jessica so perhaps this is another glimpse at Jessica's new near-omniscient powers?

The artist of Rick and Morty: Infinity Hour Marc Ellerby had this to say about the exciting new comic venture, "This prequel is going to break your heart one second and make you punch your fist in the air the next." Seeing as Star Wars has not historically had the best of luck regarding prequels, one can only hope that Infinity War will spoof on only the best parts of the beloved franchise. Fans of Star Wars and Rick and Morty are in for an explosive and revealing treat when Rick and Morty: Infinity War #1 debuts, so make sure to pick it up when it releases in March 2022.
