The origins of Gideon's name have finally been revealed in of The Righteous Gemstones' cast, with him starting out as a villain who betrayed his family in season 1 before becoming the next generation Gemstone preachers in season 4. Gideon is a character who has changed a lot, so it makes sense for The Righteous Gemstones to reveal that even his name has changed.

The Righteous Gemstones' "Interlude" episodes are typically seen as the show's best, with them traveling back in time to see what the Gemstones were up to in earlier decades. Season 4's "Interlude IV" takes place in the early 2000s, around the time that the Gemstones began working on the Gemstone Salvation Center. Alongside this and the Milsaps, "Interlude IV" also explores the storyline of Gideon's birth, with the episode spending time with a pregnant Amber and Jesse Gemstone.

Since He Was Originally Named After A Hollywood Action Star

As it turns out, "Gideon" is not the name that Jesse and Amber originally wanted. In "Interlude IV," the Gemstone family goes to Sunday lunch, with Jesse making an announcement about their kid. Jesse explains that he and Amber have decided on a name, revealing that his name will be "Stallone Gemstone," named after Sylvester Stallone.

Although the Gemstone family makes fun of the "Stallone" name, it actually makes a lot of sense based on the character's season 1 story. Before the events of The Righteous Gemstones season 1, Gideon left the Gemstones. He moved to Hollywood in order to pursue a career as a stuntman, only to return when he decided to rob the Gemstones. Since he was originally named after an action star like Stallone, a career in stunts only makes sense.

Gideon's Name Being Changed Hints At His Real Purpose After The Righteous Gemstones Season 4

Could His Story Parallel His Namesake's?

When Jesse tells Eli about who the then-named Stallone will be, Eli suggests "Gideon" as an alternate name. Gideon is a Biblical figure, with his story being told in the book of Judges. According to Judges, Gideon led an army of only 300 to victory against a much larger Midianite army. When the Israelites asked Gideon to become their king, he refused, not wanting there to be a leader other than God.

Based on this Biblical name, Gideon's story in The Righteous Gemstones season 4 could have something to do with his namesake. Gideon is being set up to take over Gemstones Ministries, with Eli training him to become a pastor. Unlike the rest of the Gemstone family, Gideon could truly put God first, rejecting the flaws of many other characters in The Righteous Gemstones.
