Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Righteous Gemstones season 4, episode 2!

The Righteous Gemstones' unorthodox season 4 premiere, which focused on Bradley Cooper's Elijah Gemstone during the Civil War, it is good to finally see the main The Righteous Gemstones cast back in season 4, episode 2.

The Righteous Gemstones season 4, episode 2 spends most of its runtime catching viewers up on what the Gemstones have been up to since Eli's retirement at the end of The Righteous Gemstones season 3. Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin are now working together to run Gemstone Ministries, preparing for Aimee-Leigh's birthday telethon. However, Eli has retired to the Florida Keys, with him refusing to leave his new life and return for the event. Meanwhile, Baby Billy is continuing his search for stardom, Gideon is attempting to become a preacher, and a friend from Aimee-Leigh's past makes her return.

Why Jesse Keeps Wanting To Fly Higher & What Him Reaching The Disco Ball Means

It May Be A Reference To Icarus

One of the funniest running gags in The Righteous Gemstones season 4, episode 2 has to do with the grand finale of Aimee-Leigh's telethon. Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin plan to use jetpacks to fly over the crowd, with them wearing angel costumes in their first attempt. Throughout the episode, the trio's jetpacks keep malfunctioning, with Jesse struggling the most. Despite this, the jetpacks actually work during the telethon. The trio flies out over the crowd, and against Judy and Kelvin's pleas, Jesse decides to fly higher. Episode 2 ends with Jesse succeeding, with him flying to the disco ball on the ceiling.

The Righteous Gemstones' Season 4 Premiere Is The Show's Riskiest Episode Yet, And I Couldn't Be More Impressed With Danny McBride's Gamble Paying Off

The Righteous Gemstones season 4, episode 1 took a massive risk by not featuring the main cast, and I'm still impressed at how good it was.

Jesse flying higher seems like an obvious set up for a gag, with viewers expecting him to fall out of the sky. To the surprise of many, however, Jesse actually succeeds. This moment is probably setting up the main theme of The Righteous Gemstones season 4, but since it is only two episodes in, this theme hasn't been revealed yet. However, it is entirely possible that it could be an allusion to the story of Icarus. Jesse wants to push Gemstone Ministries further than it has ever gone, meaning that Jesse could be flying too close to the sun.

Why Eli Kisses Lori & What Their Romance Means For The Righteous Gemstones Season 4

Is Eli Betraying Aimee-Leigh?

The other shocking moment from the end of The Righteous Gemstones season 4, episode 2 comes when Eli Gemstone kisses Lori. Lori was Aimee-Leigh's best friend before her death, with her returning to surprise the Gemstone family early in the episode. Throughout episode 2, Eli and Aimee-Leigh have several flirty moments, with Eli being torn between his feelings and his commitment to Aimee-Leigh. However, the episode ends with Eli running after Lori as she leaves the church and kissing her.

Eli and Lori's romance will probably be a major storyline in The Righteous Gemstones season 4, with him most likely attempting to keep his relationship a secret from his three children. Episode 2 establishes that the Gemstones don't want Eli to get into a new relationship, giving him enough motivation. The fact that Lori was Aimee-Leigh's best friend only makes things worse, with the Gemstone siblings most likely disapproving of this aspect of Eli's new relationship. Thus, Eli could be torn between his Gemstone family and his happiness throughout The Righteous Gemstones season 4.

Gideon's Fumbled Sermon In The Righteous Gemstones Season 4 Episode 2 Explained

Will He Become A Gemstone Preacher?

One of the biggest setups from the end of The Righteous Gemstones season 3 was that Gideon wants to enter the family business of preaching. Now in season 4, Gideon is learning about preaching from his grandfather, with Jesse being jealous that he is seeking advice from Eli instead of him. The episode reveals that Gideon has been preaching at a Wednesday morning service, although he isn't doing too well.

The Righteous Gemstones Season 4 Review: I Wish We Didn't Have To Say Goodbye To These Hilarious Characters In Funniest Season Yet

Danny McBride's HBO comedy The Righteous Gemstones is back for its fourth and final season, and the show is funnier than ever in its last outing.

Gideon's fumbled sermon is a shame, as he is one of the moral centers of the Gemstone family after his season 1 redemption. As Jesse points out, Gideon is good at almost everything else, which is why his poor preaching is so shocking. Gideon will probably improve at this skill throughout The Righteous Gemstones season 4, becoming the next generation of Gemstone ministers.
