Rocky retirement post-Creed 2, his track record has proven he can never stay too far away from his most iconic franchise.
In July, Stallone announced that he was outtakes of Rocky IV’s press conference scene where Rocky announces he will battle Drago in Russia. The footage proved there was indeed a director’s cut of the film coming, and now, alongside an official announcement, Stallone has revealed another interesting detail regarding the Rocky IV director’s cut.
In an Instagram post, Stallone officially announced that the director’s cut of Rocky IV is coming, writing that for the “35th anniversary Rocky 4 is getting a new DIRECTORS cut by me.” The Rocky star also said that it looks “great” and “soulful.” However, in response to some comments of the post, Stallone revealed that his new director’s cut will not include the rather ridiculous robot that is gifted to Rocky’s brother-in-law Paulie in the theatrical version. In a tweet put out by J. Christopher Arrison showing screenshots of Stallone’s responses, it shows one sarcastic fan comment asking if the new version expands on Paulie’s relationship with the Robot, with Stallone replying: “The robot is going to the junkyard forever. No more robot.” Full Instagram post and screenshots below:
Despite Rocky IV’s popularity, which was made more evident with Creed 2’s success as the film played off the famous scene of Drago murdering Apollo, the '80s classic has a lot of flaws. Rocky IV does rely a lot on its spectacle, and whether or not Paulie’s robot is deemed a spectacle or not, it certainly did not help the film in any way. The insertion of the robot was more of a head-scratcher for a lot of audience , and it also unnecessarily took away from some of the seriousness of the film’s story. So the exclusion of Paulie’s robot may be a welcome surprise for a lot of fans, and also add more intrigue to see how much punch this version of Rocky IV has.
What Stallone is making clear with his recent posts and this new revelation that there is no robot in his director’s cut is that this version will, in fact, be quite different. Also, considering he’s already eliminating some of the more ridiculous elements of the film, it could be a more crisp and impactful version of Rocky’s battle with Drago. While some diehard fans may still be hoping the Rocky franchise moves forward with another Rocky film, which Stallone says he has an idea for, this new version of Rocky IV, minus the robot, might be a good alternative.
