Fan-favorite X-Men couple Gambit and Rogue have finally tied the knot in X-Men Gold #30. The issue may not have seen Kitty Pryde and Colossus get married, but their fellow X-Men decide not to put the evening to waste.
Marvel d X-Men Gold #30 as "the wedding of the century." The romance between Kitty and Colossus was finally ending in marriage, after all these years, and comic book readers were delighted. But the issue takes an unexpected direction, with Kitty leaving poor Colossus at the altar.

The X-Men are left reeling, but it falls to Storm to shed a light on matters. No stranger to marriage - and divorce - herself, Storm notes that it's better Kitty and Colossus learn their love wasn't enough now, rather than several years down the road. "Marriage is hard," Storm observes, speaking from harsh experience. "It requires more than love. It requires a need. A hunger. A feeling that you'd rather not go on living than spend another day apart." Her words inspire Gambit to unexpected action, as he concludes that there's only one thing he can do; he walks straight up to Rogue and proposes.
It's a beautiful, poignant moment, one filled with conflicted emotions given what's just happened between Kitty and Colossus. Gambit swiftly makes it clear he plans on a quick engagement; "We got all our friends here, someone to marry us and a wedding canopy outside." With the blessing of Colossus and Kitty Pryde, Rogue and Gambit take over the wedding, and are married by the end of the issue.
The (spontaneous) vows are equally heart-wrenching. "We've been through so much, you and I," Rogue tells Remy. "We've faced challenges a lotta other couples never face. But we always keep finding ways back to each other. So that's what I promise you... that no matter what, I'll always find my way back to you."
Though Rogue doesn't know it, she's just vocalized the difference between their relationship, and the one between Kitty and Colossus. To Kitty, the complex on-again-and-off-again love story she has with Colossus makes for a shaky foundation for married life. To Rogue, it's a part of their identity as a couple, and she gladly embraces it. Colossus and Kitty share a painful look as they hear those wedding vows.
X-Men Gold #30 is a strange issue, one that attempts to put readers through an emotional rollercoaster. The book promised the wedding of one fan-favorite couple, but didn't deliver; instead, it pivoted, with another popular couple marrying instead. It doesn't quite work; although Marvel has been trying to set this up in the background for a while, the setup isn't entirely satisfactory.
Looking forward, Rogue and Gambit will star in a new X-Men book; the appropriately-titled Mr and Mrs X. The last X-Men to marry, Cyclops and Jean Grey, wound up honeymooning in a dystopian future timeline - so no doubt there will be bumps along the road.
