While Rotten Tomatoes scores can have a big influence over a movie's performance, there's only one thing in common with the Rotten Tomatoes scores of 2021's biggest movies. 2021 was chaotic as the world continues to recover from the coronavirus pandemic, so some movies saw hybrid theatrical and streaming releases, while others saw exclusive releases either in theaters or on streaming, but all of the top performers both at the box office and on streaming had one shared factor in their Rotten Tomatoes scores.

Studios traditionally covet the critical scores and tout those in marketing if they're good, but based on this data, the audience score means studios shouldn't worry about catering everything for critics. In fact, the lesson that may become more common with time as movies like Ghostbusters: Afterlife opt to highlight the movie's audience score.
