While other medical shows like Grey's Anatomy and ER focus on doctors working together with patients in a hospital or emergency room, Royal Pains is about a doctor, Hank Lawson, who specializes in concierge medicine, meaning that Lawson treats patients at their homes in the Hamptons. Treating people in their own houses creates more medical challenges for Lawson, including patients having disputes with him over what treatments they should receive.

Lawson also generally treats wealthy clients, as opposed to doctors helping various patients in other medical shows. However, Lawson finds time to treat lower class and less fortunate patients in need with Casey. Royal Pains also stands out among other medical shows due to its effective combination of comedy and drama, including satirizing the lifestyle and eccentric behavior of Lawson's rich clients, and the high-stakes issues involved with Lawson's treatment of patients. The Royal Pains reboot will surely continue to highlight Lawson's expertise as a concierge doctor, along with his relationships with Evan and Casey since the original show ended.

Royal Pains was on Netflix from January to December 2024, but can be purchased on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Fandango At Home.
