The latest gameplay preview for the reimagining of Saints Row, the newest open-world adventure from developer Volition pumps the breaks on the franchise's previously established lore. This version of the Saints is quite different from that which came before but seems no less chaotic.

Saints Row gameplay at its core still boasts an over-the-top flair, evident in the firefights and car chases that Volition has shown off, thus far. The studio has taken things up a notch, too, based on footage shared in another recent video. The gameplay footage in question hit the web last week courtesy of Game Informer, offering a first look at car combat and Saints Row's driving mechanics. One fascinating scene, in particular, saw the player character prone atop the hood of a moving vehicle, popping off shots while someone else took care of the driving. A new glimpse at the reboot in action makes it clear that cars can pull their weight in other ways, as well.

As part of its Saints Row cover story, Saints become a gang. Arguably the most intriguing bit occurs just over five minutes into the walkthrough, as the player tortures an enemy for information by locking them in a porta-potty, attaching the portable toilet to a convertible, and then dragging the porta-potty and its unfortunate occupant along for a bumpy and very messy ride.

With more than a week left to go in October, Game Informer's month of Saints Row coverage is bound to yield more gameplay footage. And given what's been unveiled, so far, who can say for sure how else Volition will manage to shock and surprise.

Upon its reveal over the summer, Saints Row fans expressed displeasure at the new direction for the franchise. But the real measure of Volition's success, or potential lack thereof, won't be on full display until the game itself hit store shelves early next year.
