Sally Field & Burt Reynolds Relationship History Explained

Sally Field in Smokey and the Bandit

The kiss in question occurred on the set of Smokey and the Bandit, where Field and Reynolds met for the first time in the late 70s. The pair starred opposite each in the classic car chase adventure, with Reynolds as The Bandit and Field as his newlywed, Carrie. Field describes Reynolds' kissing technique as "just not something he did very well," and says that "a lot of drooling was involved." However, the messy kiss was not enough to keep Field away, as the two began dating shortly after they met.

Reynolds, who ed away in 2018 at the age of 82, was known for many iconic roles throughout his career. His performance as Bobby “Gator” McKlusky in White Lightning (1973) and his Oscar-nominated role as Jack Horner in Boogie Nights (1997), earned him acclaim in Hollywood. Reynolds and Field dated throughout the late 70s and early 80s. Largely regarded as a tumultuous and unstable relationship by Field, Reynolds made it clear his love for her despite their past. The actor proclaimed during an interview with Vanity Fair in 2015 that Field was "the one that got away", to which Field responded a year later, "well, yeah" in 2016. Field further discussed the pair's rocky relationship in her 2018 memoir, In Pieces.

Since his death, Field has spoken about Reynolds on numerous occasions, telling Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America, he, "was a complicated man", and that she was the, "caretaker" to Reynolds. Despite their history, it's clear that Field still holds Reynolds in a special place in her heart. While he might not have been the best kisser, at least Field is able to look back on her memories with Reynolds with a laugh, and honor one of both their greatest movies.
