Samsung says its new Galaxy S23 devices are its most sustainable yet, thanks to an increased use of recycled materials. Samsung also used ocean-bound repurposed plastics in the Galaxy S22 series. Additionally, it uses recycled plastic across its product lineup, including in smartphones, earbuds, smartwatches, and monitors. The company also plans to eliminate plastic waste in its mobile packaging by 2025.
To achieve the ‘most sustainable phones yet’ status for the Galaxy S23 series, Samsung has incorporated recycled materials in more device components than in any previous Galaxy phone. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is the first flagship device to use pre-consumer recycled aluminum in the side key, volume controls, and SIM tray. The presence of recycled materials has increased in the Galaxy S23 devices, from six internal components in the Galaxy S22 Ultra to 12 internal and external components in the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
Galaxy S23 Uses Recycled Ocean Waste
The Galaxy S23 Ultra uses Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, which contains an average of 22 percent pre-consumer recycled content in the front and back glass. In addition, Samsung uses 100 percent recycled paper for its packaging boxes, including the protectors for the front and back covers. Samsung developed and incorporated new recycled plastics derived from discarded PET bottles into the back glass and front case of the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
Furthermore, the company says that it has increased the use of recycled ocean-bound plastics in the Galaxy S23 series, claiming it has prevented more than 15 tonnes of discarded fishing nets from entering the world's oceans by the end of 2023. Samsung is also collaborating with other brands and partners to increase the recycling of rare materials such as gold and cobalt in its devices.
The majority of Android phones typically receive three generations of operating system updates and two years of security patches, with the OnePlus 11 being a notable exception. However, Samsung is providing four generations of OS upgrades and five years of security updates for the Galaxy S23 series, which will allow s to continue using their smartphones for longer, if they choose to.
in devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, Galaxy Watch 5, and Galaxy Buds 2 Pro.
