The upgrade over the Galaxy Z Flip 4 that was unveiled in August along with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 as a part of Samsung's foldable lineup. Not much is known about Samsung's next-gen foldables for now, but they are likely to be interesting upgrades over the current models. As for the Z Fold 4, it comes with hardware but disappointingly retains its predecessor's camera setup.

Folding smartphones have become increasingly popular in recent years, but they still remain a small niche in the overall phone market. Samsung remains the undisputed leader in this market segment, but it is hardly the only company that's making folding devices. Other Android OEMs that have also thrown their hats in the foldables ring, include Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Motorola, among others. Even Google is said to be working on its first folding smartphone, tentatively named the Google Pixel Fold, which is expected at some point next year.

Another expected change with Samsung's next-gen foldable is an improved hinge mechanism that Young claims would make the crease across the center of the folding screen less visible compared to previous models. According to the report, while folding displays will continue to have creases for the foreseeable future, anything that can make those creases less prominent is certainly something to look forward to.

Along with the Galaxy Z Flip 5, Samsung is also expected to announce the Galaxy Z Fold 5 with several upgrades over its predecessor. That will reportedly include a lighter body, better cameras and a built-in S Pen slot, like the Galaxy S22 Ultra. It's not clear how many of these changes will seep through to the Z Flip 5, but it is safe to say that the flip phone is unlikely to ship with a built-in S Pen. As for the improved cameras and lighter build, that could very well happen, but there needs to be more information about the Galaxy Z Flip 5 before anything can be said for certain.
