"Unbelievably Shocking": Seth Rogen Teases His "Insane" TV Show That Required Amazon PR Screenings

Prime Video has officially announced that they are developing a series spinoff of the 2016 animated comedy Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg along with Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir, and directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan. The voice cast included many comedic talents of the time, including Rogen himself, Michael Cera, James Franco, Salma Hayek, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Edward Norton, Paul Rudd, and Kristen Wiig.

Sausage Party was an R-rated comedy putting a spin on the Pixar trope of imagining a world where inanimate objects come to life. The film takes place in a world where grocery store items are anthropomorphic beings with their own culture and religion, specifically based on their desire to be chosen by shoppers and taken to "The Great Beyond," as celebrated in a musical number penned by iconic songwriter Alan Menken. When a sausage named Frank (Rogen) discovers that The Great Beyond is actually just kitchens where the foodstuffs are messily devoured, he escapes back to the grocery store to try and warn his friends.

Per EW, Sausage Party is receiving an eight-episode Prime Video television series spinoff featuring the return of original voice actors Rogen, Wiig, Cera, Krumholtz, and Norton. Also ing the voice cast are Will Forte, Sam Richardson, Natasha Rothwell, and Yassir Lester. With an expected 2024 release, the series, which is titled Sausage Party: Foodtopia, is being produced by Rogen and Goldberg and is described as a reboot, so it may not feature the same characters as the original film.

Was the Original Sausage Party a Success?

Considering that it has taken eight years for this project to receive any kind of official follow-up, some may wonder if the project wasn't a major hit. However, the original Sausage Party enjoyed both critical and commercial success. In addition to making $141.3 million at the box office off a budget of $19 million (which landed it as the 29th highest-grossing domestic film of the year, between the remake of The Magnificent Seven and The Conjuring 2), the film is also Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a critic score of 82%.

It seems that this new entry in what can now be considered the Sausage Party universe merely just took some time to come to fruition, as can happen to any project. As early as 2016, Rogen, who is currently developing a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, had previously expressed interest in making a Sausage Party sequel, and this seems to merely have been the way they were able to make that happen. It is unknown if the retooling of the story was always the intention or merely a reaction to the fact that it has now been so long since the characters were originally introduced.
