The grimly sprawling Scream.
The original film followed two men who found themselves trapped and forced to play a twisted game. a new Saw installment was released each year until 2010, with writing and directing credits changing hands as the franchise wore on.
Despite the diminishing returns in quality and an increasing budget, the franchise remained no less profitable. Regardless, it went on hiatus until a soft-reboot/belated continuation with 2017's Spiral, this time devised by Chris Rock. For the first time since Saw IV, Darren Lynn Bousman will sit in the director's chair. And, with a larger budget and many more household names, the overall list of those who have starred in the franchise has grown substantially. Here's a breakdown of every actor (and character) that has featured in the various installments over the years.
Saw
- Cary Elwes as Lawrence Gordon: A renowned oncologist, Lawrence was initially suspected of being the murderous mastermind, before he found himself caught in one of Jigsaw's games. Elwes is best known for his roles in such films as Stranger Things season 3.
- Leigh Whannell as Adam Stanheight: A freelance photographer who wound up opposite Lawrence Gordon in Jigsaw's latest game. Whannell also served as the writer on the franchise's early installments. He has since focused on directing, including cult favorite The Invisible Man.
- Tobin Bell as John Kramer (aka Jigsaw): The terminally-ill architect of the brutal, morally-warped puzzles. The veteran actor has accumulated a wealth of credits across his 40-year career, including roles in such hit TV shows as The Flash.
- Danny Glover as David Tapp: A former detective obsessed with catching Jigsaw. Glover is best known for his role as Roger Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon franchise. More recently, he featured in the popular 2019 sequel, Sorry To Bother You.
- Ken Leung as Detective Steven Sing: Tapp's former and ill-fated partner. Leung is best known for his role as Miles Straume on Inhumans.
- Dina Meyer as Detective Allison Kerry: Another detective that worked the Jigsaw case alongside Tapp and Sing. Meyer previously starred in the cult classic Starship Troopers. She has also enjoyed recent roles on American Horror Story: Apocalypse.
- Michael Emerson as Zip Hindle: A hospital orderly who was forced to take Lawrence's family hostage. Emerson came to prominence as Benjamin Linus on Lost. He has since played a main role on Evil.
- Shawnee Smith as Amanda Young: The first person to ever survive one of Jigsaw's games. Outside of the horror franchise, Smith previously guest-starred on The Stand.
- Makenzie Vega as Diana Gordon: Lawrence's daughter. Vega has enjoyed several roles on both the big and small screens, including Grace Florrick on Sin City.
- Monica Potter as Alison Gordon: Lawrence's wife. Over the course of her career, Potter had prominent roles in such films as Parenthood.
- Ned Bellamy as Jeff Ridenhour: A suicidal man who is placed in a drill trap, but rescued by Detective Sing. Bellamy previously starred in Quentin Tarantino's Gotham series.
- Mike Butters as Paul Leahy: An earlier Jigsaw victim subjected to a trap involving broken glass and fire. The actor recently guest-starred in episodes of Z Nation.
- Paul Gutrecht as Mark Wilson: A 30-year-old software analyst who was also trapped in one of Jigsaw's games. The actor previously featured on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
- Alexandra Bokyun Chun as Carla Song: A medical student and Lawrence's mistress. Among others, Chun would go on to enjoy guest spots on Agents of SHIELD and The Magicians.
- Benito Martinez as Brett: Lawrence's friend and lawyer. The actor's credits include a villainous turn on 13 Reasons Why.
- Oren Koules as Donnie Greco: A drug dealer that Amanda had to kill to survive her trap. Koules also served a producer on the entire Saw franchise, as well as on the successful sitcom Two and a Half Men.
Saw II
- Tobin Bell as John Kramer (aka Jigsaw): The twisted mastermind returned to terrorize a new group.
- Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Eric Matthews: A once brutal and corrupt cop goaded into Jigsaw's latest game. Brother of Mark, Wahlberg later reunited with the Saw creators on their separate horror film, Blue Bloods.
- Shawnee Smith as Amanda Young: Jigsaw's previous victim also returned, taking on the role of his apprentice.
- Dina Meyer as Detective Allison Kerry: The only surviving cop from the original returned to continue the hunt, and revealed to be Eric's former partner and mistress.
- Erik Knudsen as Daniel Matthews: Eric's son, who is abducted and subjected to the Nerve Gas House. Knudsen would go on to prominent roles in Scream 4.
- Franky G as Xavier Chavez: A drug dealer once framed by Eric and now held in the Nerve Gas House. The actor also featured in 2003's Luke Cage.
- Glenn Plummer as Jonas Singer: A gang member similarly arrested on false evidence. As well as a small yet memorable role in Dexter.
- Tony Nappo as Gus Colyard: An ex-convict and businessman also trapped in the Nerve Gas House. In recent years, the actor has landed roles in such shows as Killjoys.
- Emmanuelle Vaugier as Addison Corday: A prostitute who was also framed by Eric and later tested by Jigsaw. Vaugier's lengthy career has included roles in everything from superhero fare like Veronica Mars.
- Beverley Mitchell as Laura Hunter: Another Nerve Gas House prisoner. Mitchell has featured in a number of TV movies and series over the decades, including Quantum Leap.
- Timothy Burd as Obi Tate: Another Jigsaw hostage who was forced to abduct the others for the Nerve Gas House. Burd has most eschewed acting in favor of working behind the scenes on such shows as The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
- Lyriq Bent as Officer Daniel Rigg: The commander of SWAT, assisting in the hunt for Jigsaw. As well as guest-roles in 12 Monkeys, Bent landed one of the main roles in Mary Kills People.
- Noam Jenkins as Michael Marks: Eric's ill-fated police informant. Jenkins would go on to star in several productions, including Rookie Blue, Condor, and, more recently, multiple episodes of Wynonna Earp.
Saw III
- Tobin Bell as John Kramer (aka Jigsaw): The criminal genius returned yet again, this time testing an estranged family.
- Shawnee Smith as Amanda Young: His apprentice also returned, though increasingly strayed from his established M.O.
- Angus Macfadyen as Jeff Denlon: A grief-stricken father who was tested regarding his capacity for vengeance and forgiveness. Macfadyen is best known for his role as Robert the Bruce in Chuck.
- Bahar Soomekh as Lynn Denlon: Jeff's wife and a surgeon tasked with keeping Jigsaw alive. Soomekh has since guest-starred in several shows, including Parenthood and Castle.
- Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Eric Matthews: The cop made a cameo, managing to temporarily escape his confinement from Saw II and confront Amanda.
- Dina Meyer as Detective Allison Kerry: Eric's former partner returned also, now investigating (and experiencing) Amanda's even more twisted traps.
- Leigh Whannell as Adam Stanheight: The original Jigsaw victim from the first film returned in a flashback that revealed his ultimate fate.
- Mpho Koaho as Timothy Young: The drunk driver who killed Jeff's son, Dylan, and forcibly part of Jigsaw's test for Jeff. On the big screen, Koaho starred opposite The Expanse.
- Barry Flatman as Judge Halden: The man who oversaw Timothy's trial and only sentenced him to six months, also part of Jeff's test. Flatman previously starred opposite Ryan Reynolds in Taken prequel series.
- Lyriq Bent as Lieutenant Daniel Rigg: The newly-promoted SWAT commander returned more obsessive in his quest to catch Jigsaw.
- Costas Mandylor as Detective Mark Hoffman: Another detective investigating the Jigsaw killings. Recent years have seen the Australian actor guest-star in ABC's fantasy series Lethal Weapon series.
- Betsy Russell as Jill Tuck: Jigsaw's ex-wife. Since breaking out in the 1980s, Russell has appeared on everything from classics like Robot Chicken.
- J. Larose as Troy: An early victim of Amanda's inescapable traps. Larose previously starred in Mayans M.C.
- Debra Lynne McCabe as Danica Scott: A witness to Dylan's death who fled the scene rather than help, also part of Jeff's test. The Canada-born actress has since enjoyed roles in Supernatural, Lost Girl, and the werewolf fantasy-horror drama: Bitten.
- Niamh Wilson as Corbett Denlon: Jeff and Lynn's oft-neglected daughter. She later starred alongside such names as Robert Pattinson in Hemlock Grove.
- Alan van Sprang as Chris: A man that Lynn was having an affair with. The actor has become a regular fixture on TV in the last few years, landing roles on Star Trek: Discovery.
- Franky G as Xavier Chavez: The character cameos in a flashback to Saw II's Nerve Gas House.
- Tim Burd as Obi Tate: The character cameos in a flashback between Jigsaw and his wife, Jill.
- Kim Roberts as Nurse Deborah: A nurse at the hospital where Lynn worked and where Jill was treated. Roberts recently appeared on The Handmaid's Tale and in multiple episodes of The CW crime-drama In The Dark.
Saw IV
- Tobin Bell as John Kramer (aka Jigsaw): The infamous villain returned, with his games continuing from beyond the grave and more of his past unraveled in flashbacks.
- Costas Mandylor as Detective Mark Hoffman: The surviving detective also returned, revealed to be Jigsaw's second apprentice.
- Scott Patterson as Agent Peter Strahm: An FBI agent that took over the Jigsaw case. Patterson is best known for playing Luke Danes on Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. He also starred in a short-lived series called The Event.
- Betsy Russell as Jill Tuck: Jigsaw's ex-wife returned to shed further light on Jigsaw's painful history, including the child they lost.
- Lyriq Bent as Officer Daniel Rigg: The obsessive cop also returned to finally be put through some Jigsaw tests of his own.
- Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Eric Matthews: Revealed to still be alive, Saw II's main character was put through another test.
- Shawnee Smith as Amanda Young: With Saw IV occurring simultaneously with Saw III, Amanda cameoed for the immediate aftermath of her death.
- Bahar Soomekh as Lynn Denlon: Lynn cameoed as new details of her death were revealed.
- Angus MacFadyen as Jeff Denlon: Jeff also briefly cameoed when Agent Strahm discovered the scene of Saw III's events.
- Athena Karkanis as Agent Lindsey Perez: Agent Strahm's FBI partner. Karkanis has had several recurring roles over the years, including on The Expanse, House of Cards.
- Louis Ferreira as Art Blank: A lawyer who had previous business dealings with John and Jill, who is later targeted by Jigsaw. Louis also enjoyed roles in Breaking Bad.
- Mike Realba as Detective Fisk: A cop that worked with Agents Strahm and Perez. Realba also starred in Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium and two episodes of Fringe.
- Marty Adams as Ivan Landsness: A motel clerk and rapist that is forced to take part in Rigg's tests. Adams' other prominent roles include Orphan Black and Hemlock Grove.
- Sarain Boylan as Brenda: A pimp that is also forced to take part in Jigsaw's game for Rigg. Boylan also enjoyed roles in Killjoys, Orphan Black, and, most recently, Burden of Truth.
- Billy Otis as Cecil Adams: A drug addict that caused the miscarriage of John and Jill's child, ultimately becoming Jigsaw's original victim. Otis previously featured in In the Dark, an episode of In The Shadow of The Moon.
- James Van Patten as Dr. Heffner: The medical examiner that performed Jigsaw's autopsy. Working since the 1970s, Van Patten has starred in such classics as Happy Days and alongside fellow Saw actor, Elwes, in Robin Hood: Men in Tights.
- Kevin Rushton as Trevor: A victim placed in a trap with Art Blank. Rushton's primary work since has been in stunts, with credits including the The Incredible Hulk.
- Ingrid Hart as Tracy Rigg: Daniel Rigg's wife. Hart previously credits include Canadian time-travel comedy-drama Being Erica and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
- Ron Lea as Rex: An abusive husband put through one of Jigsaw's traps. Lea had a recurring role across multiple seasons of Orphan Black, as well as parts in Punisher: War Zone.
- Janet Land as Morgan: Rex's wife, who is given the chance to kill him in Jigsaw's test. Land has recently landed roles in such popular superhero tales as Umbrella Academy.
- Tony Nappo as Gus: The previous Jigsaw victim cameoed in a flashback at Jill's drug rehabilitation clinic.
- Emmanuelle Vaugier as Addison: Another previous victim that cameoed in a flashback with John Kramer before he became Jigsaw.
- Noam Jenkins as Michael: The third Saw II victim cameoed in another flashback to Jill's clinic.

- Meagan Good as Luba Gibbs: A city planner, she was the second of the five. Good recently enjoyed a recurring role on Shazam!
- Mark Rolston as Agent Dan Erickson: The FBI agent who took over control of the Jigsaw case. Rolston featured in several hugely-popular and successful films, including The Departed.
- Carlo Rota as Charles: A journalist and the third of the five. As well as a prominent role on both Breaking Bad and 24, Rota also starred in Jane The Virgin.
- Greg Bryk as Mallick Scott: An arsonist and drug addict, he was the fourth. A veteran of countless TV shows, including Code 8.
- Laura Gordon as Ashley: A corrupt former fire inspector and the fifth member of the trapped group. Gordon previously starred opposite Fringe's Anna Torv and Lost's Alan Dale on Secret City and enjoyed brief roles in cult favorites like Legend of the Seeker.
- Sarah Power as Angelina Acombe: Hoffman's younger sister. Power's most recent roles include Good Witch.
- Joris Jarsky as Seth Baxter: The boyfriend and murderer of Angelina, and Hoffman's first victim before becoming Jigsaw's apprentice. Jarsky recently starred in Agents of SHIELD and the short-lived Netflix series October Faction.
- Mike Butters as Paul Leahy: A victim from the original Saw, Paul's moment of abduction is glimpsed in flashback.
- Al Sapienza as Chief of Police: The head of the metropolitan police department. The veteran actor has countless credits to his name, including turns on Most Dangerous Game.
- Mike Realba as Detective Fisk: The cop returned, seen helping the FBI with the investigation.
- Jeff Pustil as Bernie Feldman: The executor of Jigsaw's will. Pustil went on to several guest appearances, including Warehouse 13 and The CW's Beauty and the Beast.
- Samantha Lemole as Pamela Jenkins: A reporter that covered the Jigsaw killings. Lemole is also known for Mom and Dad.
- Lyriq Bent as Officer Daniel Rigg: Revealed to have died from wounds inflicted in Saw IV, he was included in a memorial for the fallen characters.
- Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Eric Matthews: The character is also glimpsed at the memorial.

- Athena Karkanis as Agent Lindsey Perez: The FBI agent was revealed to not have died in Saw IV, returning to aid Erickson.
- Samantha Lemole as Pamela Jenkins: A news reporter, and revealed to be William Easton's sister.

- Shawn Ahmed as Allen: William Easton's file clerk, forced to participate in his game. Ahmed recently starred on The Twilight Zone reboot.
- Janelle Hutchison as Addy: William Easton's secretary, forced to participate in his game. Hutchison previously featured in 2007's Katie Holmes on the historical drama, The Kennedys.
- Gerry Mendicino as Hank: A janitor at William Easton's company, forced to participate in his game. Mendicino's most notable role is that of Uncle Taki in My Big Fat Greek Wedding and its 2016 sequel.
- Caroline Cave as Debbie: An attorney for William Easton's company, forced to participate in his game. Cave recently starred in 2017's Van Helsing.
- George Newbern as Harold Abbott: A man who died after William Easton revoked his health insurance. As well as voicing both the villain Sephiroth in Nip/Tuck.
- Shauna MacDonald as Tara Abbott: Harold's wife, forced to watch over William's test. MacDonald recently starred in Reign and had a recurring role in Hemlock Grove.
- Devon Bostick as Brent Abbott: Harold's son, who also oversaw William's test. Bostick is best known for his role in the The 100.
- Darius McCrary as Dave: A junior associate at Umbrella Health included in William's final test. As well as lending his voice to Anger Management.
- Shawn Mathieson as Josh: A junior associate at Umbrella Health included in William's final test. Mathieson starred in such other horror fare as Urban Legend and teen thriller The Skulls.
- Melanie Scrofano as Gena: A junior associate at Umbrella Health included in William's final test. As well as playing the titular lead on Wynonna Earp, Scrofano enjoyed prominent roles in The Silencing.
- Karen Cliche as Shelby: A junior associate at Umbrella Health included in William's final test. The actress previously had a main role in the shortlived Flash Gordon TV series.
- James Gilbert as Aaron: A junior associate at Umbrella Health included in William's final test. Gilbert has enjoyed roles in such shows as The Girlfriend Experience.

- Laurence Anthony as Rogers: Gibson's associate in Internal Affairs. Anthony's previously guest-starred on 30 Rock.
- Dean Armstrong as Cale: Bobby Dagen's best friend and co-conspirator. Armstrong previously starred in Queer as Folk, multiple horror sequels, and Alphas.
- Naomi Snieckus as Nina: Bobby Dagen's publicist. The actress and comedian previously featured in The Listener, Lost Girl, and Haven.
- Rebecca Marshall as Suzanne: Bobby Dagen's lawyer. Marshall previously appeared on Franklin & Bash, Cedar Cove, and The West Wing.
- James Van Patten as Dr. Heffner: The medical examiner returned, crossing paths with Hoffman.
- Anne Greene as Dina: A Jigsaw victim targetted for manipulating the affections of two men. Greene's only other credit is a shortlived anthology series Femme Fatales.
- Sebastian Pigott as Brad: One of Dina's victims, later a survivor of a Jigsaw trap. Piggot's recently landed recurring turns on Wynonna Earp and Channel Zero.
- Jon Cor as Ryan: Dina's second boyfriend and victim, later a Jigsaw survivor. Cor is best known for playing Hodge Starkweather on Shadowhunters, as well as American Pie franchise.
- Chester Bennington as Evan: Neo-Nazi gang member and Jigsaw victim. Best known as the lead singer of Linkin Park, Bennington also had roles in Crank 2: High Voltage.
- Dru Viergever as Dan: Second Neo-Nazi gang member and Jigsaw victim. The actor previously starred in The Expanse and had a small role in The Shape of Water.
- Gabby West as Kara: Third Neo-Nazi gang member and Jigsaw victim. West won her Saw role on the reality show Scream Queens. Before that, she appeared in Bruno, from the mind of Sacha Baron Cohen.
- Benjamin Clost as Jake: Fourth Neo-Nazi gang member and Jigsaw victim. Clost previously guest-starred on 12 Monkeys and lent his voice to the Assassin's Creed video games.
- Kim Schraner as Palmer: An officer in the Internal Affairs Division. The actress previously acted opposite Mila Kunis in the bizarrely conceived sequel American Psycho 2.
- Oluniké Adeliyi as Sidney: A grateful Jigsaw survivor, seen at Bobby Dagen's group. Adeliyi's credits include a turn in the Canadian police procedural, Flashpoint, and the role of Shadow Moon's mother in American Gods.
- Ish Morris as Alex: Sidney's abusive boyfriend and ill-fated Jigsaw test subject. As well as multiple episodes of Killjoys, the Canadian actor and singer also starred in Batwoman.
- Christine Simpson as Donna Evans: Reality TV show host. Outside of Saw, Simpson has no other credits and is best known as a TV sports reporter, specializing in ice hockey.
- Tanedra Howard as Simone: A member of Bobby Dagen's group, now with a prosthetic arm.
- Shauna MacDonald as Tara Abbott: A previous Jigsaw game participant in Bobby Dagen's group.

- Tobin Bell as John Kramer (aka Jigsaw): Despite it being a decade since his death, the character returned to wreak fresh havoc and appear in new flashbacks.
- Matt more as Logan Nelson: An army veteran and medical examiner. more previously starred in 13 Reasons Why and the Lethal Weapon series, as well as Last Man Standing.
- Callum Keith Rennie as Detective Halloran: The detective investigating the new Jigsaw killings. Rennie has amassed countless credits in both film and television, most recently in such offerings as Fifty Shades trilogy.
- Hannah Emily Anderson as Eleanor Bonneville: Logan's colleague in the medical examiner's office and self-confessed Jigsaw fangirl. Anderson has also landed roles in The Purge.
- Clé Bennett as Detective Keith Hunt: Halloran's partner in the police department. Bennett previously enjoyed recurring roles on both The Tick.
- Laura Vandervoort as Anna: A former neighbor of John Kramer's chosen to be one of Jigsaw's new victims. The actress is widely known for playing Smallville's version of Supergirl but has more recently been featured on Bitten, V-Wars, and The Handmaid's Tale.
- Paul Braunstein as Ryan: A drunk driver and fellow Jigsaw victim. Braunstein has recently been credited in Murdoch Mysteries, October Faction, and Black Mirror.
- Mandela Van Peebles as Mitch: The Jigsaw victim responsible for the death of John Kramer's nephew. The actor previously starred in little known films like Limbo and A Clear Shot.
- Brittany Allen as Carly: A purse snatcher picked to be a Jigsaw victim for causing the death of an asthmatic woman. The daytime Emmy winning actress played the tragic superhero Popclaw on The Prodigy.
- Josiah Black as Edgar Munsen: A drug-addicted criminal and another Jigsaw victim. Black recently starred alongside Dolph Lundgren in the inexplicable sequel to Kindergarten Cop.
- Shaquan Lewis as Officer Solomon: An officer aiding in the investigation of the Jigsaw killings. Lewis's roles have included turns in Riverdale.
- Edward Ruttle as Matthew: Anna's tormented and ill-fated husband. Along with several TV Movies, Ruttle could be seen in The Good Witch.

- Chris Rock as Detective Ezekiel Banks: A police officer that investigates the resurgence of Jigsaw-like killings. The comedian, actor, writer, and host has amassed several notable roles over the years. Most recently, he could be found in The Witches.
- Samuel L. Jackson as Marcus Banks: Ezekiel's father and a fellow police detective. One of the most prolific actors in Hollywood, Jackson has a nearly endless repertoire that spans several huge franchises. His latest roles include John Shaft in Marvel Cinematic Universe outings.
- Max Minghella as Detective William Schenk: Ezekiel's partner. Son of the acclaimed writer/director, Anthony, Minghella is best known for his work in The Social Network and on Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale.
- Marisol Nichols as Captain Angie Garza: Ezekiel's boss. Following roles in Alias and 24, Nichols has enjoyed prominent success in young adult series like Riverdale.
- Dan Petronijevic as Detective Marv Boswick: A fellow police officer. The Canadian actor could most recently be seen in the native sitcom Letterkenny.
- Zoie Palmer as Kara Boswick: An as-yet mysterious character. As well as Lost Girl and Wynonna Earp, Palmer could also be seen in SYFY's Dark Matter.
Spiral: From the Book of Saw saw Bousman return to the director's chair, having previously departed the franchise after Saw IV. He worked from a script written by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger. Original franchise producers also returned, working with Rock to take things to a "really intense and twisted place" while offering "a completely fresh perspective". The cast will also include John Tokatlidis, Genelle Williams, K.C. Collins, Christopher Tai, Morgan David Jones, Nazneen Contractor, Frank Licari, Leia Charles Leigh, Alison Johnson, and Edie Inksetter. However, the details of their characters and how they fit into the plot have remained under wraps so far. All will become clear, though, as the new installment draws closer and the direction of the overall Saw franchise becomes more apparent.
