The Last Kingdom is one of the best current Netflix Originals. The series is set during the Saxon rule of England and details the many clashes that occurred between the Anglo Saxons and the invading Vikings during this period.
While the Last Kingdom focuses on historical action rather than horror, there are certainly some terrifying and intimidating characters in the show; some of whom are even considered to be heroes.
Cnut
Cnut may not be the most intimidating Viking in of their fighting ability, but he is certainly intimidating when one combines his brutal fighting style with a level of cunning that helped him gain his power.
With the help of Æthelwold, Cnut took control of Ragnar’s army and even tricked Brida into becoming his partner. Cnut is an untrustworthy and fierce warrior that deserves a place on this list.
Alfred
While King Alfred may not be the scariest in of his fighting ability or physicality, he is incredibly scary when it comes to his overall power. As the King of Wessex, Alfred is one of the most powerful people in England.
Furthermore, Alfred has shown that he is an intelligent leader who is more than capable of defeating enemies in battle. Despite the fact that he is not an intimidating warrior, he is still one of the most intimidating characters on the show.
Svein/ Skorpa
Svein of the White Horse was one of the first villains to appear in the show, with Svein making his appearance in season one of the show. Svein is a fierce Danish warrior who has a reputation for fierce skill and brutal combat.
What makes Svein so intimidating, aside from his skill in combat, is his appearance. Svein has molded his appearance to make himself appear even more intimidating.
Ubba
One of the earliest villains to appear on the show, with Ubba being one of the main threats to present themselves in the show. Ubba is a fierce Viking warlord who has a reputation for being one of the most powerful and brutal Danes.
Ubba stood up to Alfred, refusing to bow to his demands, and even continued to invade and attack Wessex, showing his power and lack of fear.
Bloodhair
One of the earlier villains in the show, how could one not make this list with a name like Bloodhair. The Viking not only carried an intimidating name but also represented a huge threat to Alfred’s Wessex.
The Bloodhair storyline was also entwined with mysticism, as Skade played a huge role in this character’s purpose in the show.
Ragnar
Ragnar is one of the most fierce and intimidating warriors in the show. Since season one, Ragnar proved that he was a brilliant warrior, with the Danish fighter even commanding his own force in season three.
The only reason Ragnar was killed was the cunning and underhanded tactics of both Cnut and Æthelwold, with the latter killing Ragnar in his sleep.
Brida
Brida was a close friend of Uhtred and always seemed to respect him throughout the run of the show. This changed in season four, however, with Brida setting herself up to become the main villain in season 5 of the show.
After the death of Ragnar, Brida became ruthless to a whole new degree and now that her sights are set on harming Uhtred both emotionally and physically, she is certain to cause some pain next season.
Skade
Skade is a short-lived villain, but she certainly left her mark on the viewers of The Last Kingdom. Skade was a Viking witch who placed a curse on Uhtred that would take up most of season three.
While Skade may not have been the scariest villain in of the threat of physical damage, she is terrifying because we don’t know the limit of her power. Additionally, the fact that fierce Viking warriors were scared of her also made her seem that bit scarier.
Wihtgar
The audience hasn’t seen too much of Whitgar yet, but what has been shown appears to make the character out to be the Last Kingdom’s answer to Ramsay Bolton. Wihtgar is the cousin of Uhtred, with the character appearing in season four to prevent Uhtred from taking his birthright of Bebbanburg.
The character seems slightly unhinged, which adds to his intimidation factor and, furthermore, he also killed Father Beocca, which makes him seem incredibly dangerous considered the length of time Beocca has been on the show.
Uhtred
Despite being the main character of the series, there is no denying that Uhtred is one of the scariest characters in the show. While the audience may not often recognize this due to the fact that he’s usually a force for good, for his enemies, Uhtred would be terrifying.
Uhtred’s reputation is incredible, with him even receiving the title of Dane Slayer among some of the Vikings. Additionally, season 2 showed that Uhtred even uses theatrics to intimidate his enemies, with Uhtred dressing as a ‘bringer of death’ to scare his enemies.
