The newest Pokémon games Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are here and players are already encountering bizarre glitches. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are largely different from past core Pokémon games because of the fact they feature open-world gameplay. Players can explore the Paldea region without constraints and battle Pokémon in the wild.
Despite being largely well-received, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are already becoming infamous for glitches and performance issues. One glitch encountered by Reddit Pokémon BDSP cracking down on glitch cloning the other year - but the volume of them in Scarlet and Violet has caused a stir online.
Scarlet & Violet Are Turning Out To Be Some Of Pokémon's Glitchiest Games
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet were two of the most anticipated games of 2022, and while the critics' consensus is that they have largely lived up to that hype, glitches like the example shared by BenGMan30 are causing backlash online. Scarlet and Violet aren't the only games from the backend of 2022 to be criticized for poor performance either, with WB Games Montréal's Gotham Knights being met with a backlash from some players over its frame-rate issues on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's open-world gameplay is a first for the franchise, but the scale of the titles combined with the series' annualized release pattern may be to blame for the glitches and performance problems players are currently experiencing. It's certainly great to see the franchise branching out into the open-world genre - as it's something that players have been requesting for a long time - but the execution has been let down by the noted performance problems post-release. Game Freak will likely address many of these issues with subsequent patches, but player frustrations are understandable, given these kinds of performance problems and bugs should have been addressed before launch.
At the same time, it has been shown in the past that glitches can actually help a game's overall notoriety. Bethesda's RPGs are famed for their janky qualities, with many of the most iconic Skyrim and Fallout moments coming as a result of bugs and glitches. Cyberpunk 2077's ridiculous launch glitches were well documented and eventually led to refunds, but plenty of players got value out of seeing all the wild bugs Night City had prior to CDPR releasing a number of important patches. While not quite bordering on that same meme-worthy quality, it is possible that some Pokémon Scarlet and Violet players may grow attached to some of the more innocuous bugs in-game before they're inevitably addressed in a future patch.
