WARNING! Contains SPOILERS for School Spirits season 1!School Spirits seemingly answered every burning question with its season 1 finale but actually created even more mysteries surrounding School Spirits' resident ghost therapist, Mr. Martin (Josh Zuckerman). The teacher is the leader of the afterlife group that Maddie (Peyton List) attends with other spirits who died at the school and haven't yet crossed over. Mr. Martin seemed pretty suspicious throughout the season, but Maddie didn't spend much time questioning if he killed her, as she did with Mr. Anderson(Patrick Gilmore), her ex-friend Claire (Rainbow Wedell), and her own mother (Maria Dizzia). It turns out Mr. Martin was more guilty than anyone expected and should have been at the top of Maddie's suspect list.

The School Spirits season finale revealed that Maddie wasn't actually dead, her body had just been taken over by a spirit named Janet. Mr. Martin knew about this but said nothing and was actively trying to get Maddie to move forward and stop trying to how she died. He used the excuse that looking back at the past was so painful, revealing that his own death was too painful for him to look back on. However, the end of the episode told a different story, and now School Spirits has raised more questions about Mr. Martin than it answered.

5 Did Mr. Martin Kill Janet In The Fire?

Mr. Martin Lied About Janet's Death

After Dawn crossed over, the teenage spirits were obsessed with figuring out why her experience was different from Janet's. Still, Mr. Martin wanted everyone to move forward, the same way he wanted them to stop looking back on their deaths and trying to help Maddie figure out how she died. Mr. Martin breaks down and tells the spirits that he doesn't like looking back on the past because he feels a lot of guilt about his own death. According to Mr. Martin, he wasn't paying attention during his class, and a student started a fire.

He was able to save all of his students, but he couldn't save himself. He feels guilty that he was careless enough to allow a fire to start, and now all his students have to live with the traumatizing memory for the rest of their lives. However, while digging through documents, the spirits discover that Janet also died in the fire and that her parents believe Mr. Martin was the one who caused her death. The season 1 finale doesn't confirm this, and Mr. Martin never addresses Janet dying in the fire. However, with the series renewed for season 2 on Paramount+, this will be an important question for School Spirits to answer about Mr. Martin.

4 Was Mr. Martin Trying To Protect Others From Janet?

Mr. Martin Hid What He Knew About Crossing Over

It's clear Mr. Martin knows more about Janet than he was letting on. However, the season finale seemingly paints Mr. Martin as a villain who may have killed Janet in a fire and was fighting with her before she took over Maddie's body. The season finale doesn't confirm what happened, and since Janet was so quick to jump into Maddie's body and flee the town with no remorse, she might be a lot more dangerous than anyone thought. It's possible that Mr. Martin isn't the guilty one, but Janet is, and he was just trying to protect everyone else from her and all the evil things she's capable of.

3 Was Mr. Martin Involved In Maddie's Disappearance?

One Theory Suggests Mr. Martin And Janet Are Allies

Peyton List as a sad Maddie in School Spirits episode 8

When Maddie finally re how she disappeared, she flashes to a scene of Mr. Martin arguing with Janet before the door to the room they're in opens, and Janet takes over her body. However, it's unclear if Mr. Martin was in on the plan for Janet to take over Maddie's body or if it was her own decision. Some theories suggest School Spirits season 2 will indicate Mr. Martin was manipulating Janet and that led to her possessing Maddie's body.

He tries to make Maddie forget her disappearance and wants everyone to believe Janet crossed over. He definitely looks suspicious. If he was against what Janet did, he would be on Maddie's side, telling her the truth and trying to get her back to her body. Unfortunately, the season 1 finale doesn't clarify how much Mr. Martin knew about Janet's plan to return to life in Maddie form.

2 Was Mr. Martin Involved In Other Deaths?

Mr. Martin Could Have Connections To Other School Spirits

Mr. Martin clearly had something to do with Janet's death, but could he have been involved in others' deaths too? Rhonda's death is more mysterious than anyone else's. The spirit was murdered by her guidance counselor, Mr. Manfredo, after thinking he was a kind teacher who really cared about her. When Rhonda got accepted to Berkley and excitedly told the teacher, he got angry and killed her.

One School Spirits theory suggests that Mr. Martin is Mr. Manfredo, and he was the one to kill Rhonda. He could also be connected to the many other deaths that have occurred at the school. If he was the one to start the fire that killed him and Janet, then he might have some darkness inside of him that drives him to kill or harm other students.

School Spirits season 1 is also available to stream on Netflix.

1 What Were Mr. Martin & Janet Arguing About?

Some Mr. Martin Questions Linger

A closeup of Peyton List as Maddie in School Spirits

When Maddie found Mr. Martin and Janet before Janet took over her body, they were in the middle of a heated argument. While it's unclear what they were arguing about, the best guess is that Janet already had the plan to take over Maddie's body, and she was sharing it with a disapproving Mr. Martin. If Janet really is dangerous, Mr. Martin may have been trying to stop her from what she was about to do, and he could have been fighting with her about some of her other bad behaviors. The next School Spirits season can show Mr. Martin's final conversation with Janet.

School Spirits had a satisfying season 1 ending, revealing what happened to Maddie and adding in an unexpected twist. Luckily, with all the Mr. Martin mysteries, the show still has enough content for another season. The second season could potentially dive into the suspicious teacher, find out what really happened the day he died, and reveal all the other mysteries that surround the potential villain. There are also plenty of questions to answer about Janet, but according to the School Spirits season 1 finale, the ghost's story ties in with her teacher, who may or may not have murdered her in the school fire.
