Scott Pilgrim vs. the World's anime adaptation has reunited the entire main cast of the original film. The video game-inspired tale, in which a Canadian slacker falls in love with a woman named Ramona Flowers and must fight her seven evil exes, originated as a graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O'Malley. It was adapted into a live-action film by Edgar Wright in 2010 with Michael Cera as Scott and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona.
Per Scott Pilgrim anime adaptation has been officially ordered to series and is set to reunite the entire main live-action cast as voice performers reprising their roles. In addition to Cera and Winstead, this includes Satya Bhabha, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Alison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Johnny Simmons, Mark Webber, Mae Whitman, and Ellen Wong. Additional casting announcements will come at a later date. Check out Wright's enthusiastic celebration of this announcement below:
So Will the Scott Pilgrim Anime Be More Faithful To the Movie or The Graphic Novels?
While this casting is a huge development for the series, it also casts doubt upon exactly how the anime will be telling the story of Scott Pilgrim. Although both the graphic novel series and film are iconic in their own ways, there are several key differences between them. This includes the 2010 Scott Pilgrim's alternate ending, which was invented for the film as the final volume of the graphic novel had not yet been published.
Wright says the Scott Pilgrim series is all-new and an expansion. However, the presence of the defeated evil exes seems to imply that at least some of the original story will be retold in the anime. Even if that is not the case and the series is an out-and-out sequel continuation, it remains to be seen which ending they will opt to move forward from.
Given the presence of the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World cast, it seems likely that the movie ending will be the one that writer BenDavid Grabinski, working with O'Malley, will go for. However, it remains to be seen. Whatever route they choose to go down, reassembling this cast is a massive achievement considering the many different directions the rising stars of the film went following its release, including huge sitcoms, Oscar wins, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
