The as-yet unknown character, played by Samara Weaving, is briefly glimpsed in the new trailer for Scream 6, which could hint that she is Ghostface's first victim in the film. Weaving previously worked with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett on 2019's Ready or Not. While already having gained some attention for roles in films such as Bad Girl, Mayhem, and The Babysitter, it can be argued that Samara Weaving's role in Ready or Not was her first true breakthrough and appearing in Scream 6 can be seen as her way of repaying the filmmakers.
Weaving's role in Ready or Not was already referenced in the original teaser trailer for Scream 6. That Easter Egg raised some questions about Samara Weaving's role in the film, and it would have been perhaps a bit too meta to have Weaving play a central character in a movie where Ready or Not exists in the universe. As such, it maybe makes more sense for her character to be a victim.
Scream 6's Trailer Hints That Samara Weaving's Character Is The Opening Kill
The appearance of Samara Weaving in the new Scream 6 trailer comes during a blink-and-miss moment during the montage of shots towards the end. Weaving's character is standing in an alley on her cell phone while looking at something behind her shoulder. Even with no proper context, this shot can be interpreted as probably from the film's opening as a way to establish the New York City setting.
When Samara Weaving was cast in Scream 6, there was some talk that it was an attempt by the filmmakers to replace Sidney Prescott, as Neve Campbell decided not to return due to wage issues. However, the new trailer makes it look like the focus will primarily be on survivors of Ghostface, including Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere). As such, it probably would not have made much sense for Samara Weaving to the cast as a new central character.
Why It Makes Sense For Samara Weaving's Character To Die First In Scream 6
Aside from the returning cast, Samara Weaving is arguably the most well-known actor in Scream 6. As such, this would allow Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett to not only include a familiar face from Ready or Not but to pull off a Drew Barrymore and kill her off in the opening scene. While it likely won't be as shocking as it was when Barrymore's character was offed in 1996, killing Samara Weaving's character would allow Bettinelli-Olpi and Gillett to pay homage to the Scream franchise's roots.
As such, playing Ghostface's first victim ends up being the perfect role for Samara Weaving in the Scream 6 movie. Weaving is recognizable enough as a star that audiences may start to believe that she is a central character. Then she gets killed off in the first scene, and the film can continue, with the Ready or Not Easter egg happening later on with not as much confusion.
