Scrubs is a medical comedy revolving around J.D. (Zach Braff), who starts the show as an intern at Sacred Heart Hospital. Viewers follow his professional journey in addition to the toll being a doctor takes on his personal life. J.D. also narrates the show and is prone to constant bizarre daydreams, which helps relieve the stress of his work. Scrubs was an intriguing mix of comedy and drama since it wasn't afraid to get a little dark.

It shows J.D.'s first couple of days at Sacred Heart, and in addition to introducing all the key characters, it lays the groundwork for Scrubs' unique narration/daydream style.

J.D. is under constant stress throughout "My First Day," learning to adapt to the relentless onslaught of work and breaking through his fear of performing even simple procedures on patients. The first episode of any show has to perform a balancing act of introducing all the characters and establishing a style, which can be tricky. Scrubs' season 1 pilot manages to do all that within a tight runtime, and while it mostly focuses on J.D., key characters like Elliot and Dr. Cox get a chance to shine too.

Scrubs season 1 "My First Day" is a rare example of a show that started with confidence, and while later seasons would feature some missteps, this pilot episode set J.D. on his journey in the perfect way.
