Those looking to experience San Diego Comic-Con 2022 will have to experience the event in person this year—although at least one major company will be streaming their weekend online. The iconic convention is returning to the San Diego Convention Center for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began—with mask and vaccination mandates in effect—and the event is expected to draw crowds of over 130,000 attendees. San Diego Comic-Con serves as the venue for many significant announcements in entertainment, with industry giants such as Marvel, DC, Disney, and many more using the annual event to key their fans in on exciting, projects.
Since the first Comic-Con in 1970, San Diego Comic-Con has been the premier convention for pop-culture fans and creators alike. However, the rise of COVID-19 caused the iconic convention to move online in both 2020 and 2021. For the first time in 50 years, Comic-Con was reduced to pre-recorded s that streamed on YouTube and a virtual exhibit hall in an event dubbed Comic-Con@Home. While the online event paled in comparison to the usual splendor of the real thing, it allowed entire fandoms to celebrate announcements at once over the typical exclusivity of the ticketed convention.
With the return of the in-person festivities, however, Comic-Con is once again a fan-exclusive event. While the trailers and announcements released at Comic-Con 2022 s will eventually be released to the general public, those who are able to attend will have the privilege of being the first to view the newest trailers. Comic-Con has always been a fan-exclusive event; returning to this format means returning to the roots of what makes attending Comic-Con such a coveted experience. While some Comic-Con 2022 trailers and streams may be released at the time of the event, a vast majority will be released after the event has concluded.
