Summary

  • Secret Invasion's introduction of British intelligence suggests the possibility of Captain Britain's debut in the MCU.
  • G'iah, portrayed by Emilia Clarke, could potentially become the MCU's Captain Britain due to her newly acquired superhuman abilities and her connection to Sonya Falsworth.
  • The tease of Brian Braddock and Betsy Braddock in previous MCU references raises speculation about Captain Britain's future introduction.

Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion may have secretly given the MCU's Captain Britain a new origin story. Although the series depicted a battle between American Nick Fury and a rebellious faction of shape-shifting extraterrestrial Skrulls, much of Secret Invasion's action took place in the United Kingdom. Not only was Fury revealed to have been living in the UK with his wife, Varra, but Secret Invasion also explored British intelligence by introducing Olivia Colman as Sonya Falsworth, a high-ranking agent with MI6. This new setting for the MCU could be teasing the introduction of a major hero in Marvel Comics, and it's possible that Captain Britain has already been seen.

In Marvel Comics, several heroes have been depicted as Captain Britain, most notably Brian Braddock, and later his twin sister, Betsy Braddock. Introduced in 1976, Brian Braddock found himself empowered by the legendary magician Merlyn, and his daughter Roma, assigned to be the primary hero and champion of the United Kingdom, in much the same way that Captain America is for the United States. Betsy Braddock, a mutant, operated as Captain Britain for a short time before becoming the X-Men member Psylocke. Captain Britain's MCU debut has been teased, but Secret Invasion might have taken a huge step towards debuting the British hero.

Secret Invasion Sets Up G'iah As The MCU's Captain Britain

Super Skrull G'iah in Secret Invasion

Despite being an alien Skrull, G'iah's human form in Secret Invasion is portrayed by British actor Emilia Clarke, which gives her character an understandable connection to the United Kingdom. After battling the Gravik in Secret Invasion's finale, G'iah entered into a deal with Sonya Falsworth which would give her access to resources to continue the battle. It's possible that G'iah could have been set up as the MCU's version of Captain Britain, and though this would be a massive change for Captain Britain's origin story, there are many similarities between Braddock and G'iah.

Captain Britain's abilities in Marvel Comics include superhuman strength, speed, durability, and reflexes, but he is also able to generate force fields and energy beams, and is granted the ability of flight. Secret Invasion's finale saw G'iah obtain these same abilities, as she was enhanced with the DNA of multiple MCU characters in the Harvest. G'iah has become the MCU's most overpowered hero, but this could lead to her taking her place as the cornerstone superhero of the United Kingdom, potentially being kitted out with equipment and resources from MI6 to become Captain Britain.

Could The Real Captain Britain Ever Return To The MCU?

Brian Braddock's Captain Britain in Marvel Comics

Neither Brian Braddock nor his sister Betsy have yet been introduced to the MCU, but their name has previously been heard. During Avengers: Endgame's Time Heist, Steve Rogers overhears Peggy Carter in 1970 stating that "Braddock hasn't checked in recently," and though this tease hasn't yet seen a resolution, it's possible she could have been referring to Brian Braddock, the original Captain Britain. Peggy could have also been referring to Brian's father, Sir James Braddock, who was a founding member of the multiversal Captain Britain Corps, though this would also tease the MCU debut of the real Captain Britain.

Peggy Carter herself became a version of Captain Britain, Captain Carter, in Phase 4's What If...? season 1, and was later featured as a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. For the MCU's official Captain Britain, however, G'iah may be the perfect candidate, as this would give her an opportunity to have a lengthy future in the MCU, and also show off some of her impressive abilities. The introduction of Captain Britain, whether it be G'iah or one of the Braddocks, after Secret Invasion could also lead into the MCU's mutant-centric storylines, which may be explored after the Multiverse Saga.
