Warning! This article contains spoilers for Secret Level episode 15.

Secret Level episode 15 does something a little different to the rest of the episodes in the video game adaptation anthology series, as O embarks on a journey of discovery. Secret Level sets out to adapt and explore the worlds of video games in a unique TV format, with each episode exploring a different title. Prime Video has done a great job developing 15 adventures in season 1 that hark back to classic video game worlds and deliver hit after hit of nostalgia and excitement thanks to the creative foundations and the compelling storylines.

In episode 15, it switched things up with a story that incorporated and explored several different video game franchises all beneath the PlayStation umbrella. The main character, O, starts out as a courier delivering packages in arace against the clock to unlock minor upgrades, but when a mysterious stranger hires her for a mission that seems out of the ordinary, she jumps at the chance. However, her Buddibot is clearly not happy about going off the beaten track, and O faces off increasingly intense threats before getting to her destination.

When O finally reaches the destination on her last package, she steps inside the abandoned building, only to have it come to life around her with pictures, drawings and posters of beloved video games and herself depicted as the primary character. The truth is, O was actually the intended recipient, and the package and the journey helped her to snap out of the repetitive and boring cycle of a mediocre game to all the fun she had with a wide variety of games. This explains the PlayStation logo pinned on her bag, and her enthusiasm and innate skills to deal with each new threat.

How Secret Level Turns An Unlikely Arcade Classic Into A Gory Horror Story

Secret Level's horrifying approach to Pac-Man highlights how effective adaptation can turn even basic arcade classics into something totally new.

O was no ordinary courier, and through her mission, she was able to see the vibrant world of video games, challenges and fun to be had. Prior to this, the Buddibot and a pair of glasses locked her in to repetitive and unrewarding cycles that ultimately felt disappointing. It's a love letter to video games, and a way to turn the mirror back on the audience viewing the show who are likely fond gamers themselves, who have wonderful memories of many of the titles that were explored throughout Secret Level season 1.

The PlayStation Multiverse Comes To Life To Stop O

On the way to deliver the package, O is faced with several menacing threats. Initially, uniformed guards approach holding large guns and shouting that "Democracy isn't done with you" repeatedly. Then, she spots a Collossus in the distance who threatens to smash her and her bike to pieces. Fortunately, the package comes to life and gives her a new, 'unsanctioned' upgrade that helps her evade at lightning speed. Beyond this, Kratos arrives with a hero's landing, Sackboy flies by in a small air balloon, and O finds herself tumbling to the ground before a pair of magical wings help her land safely.

All of these moments provide minor moments and references to video games, all of which exist in the PlayStation ecosystem. But the biggest threat appears to be the Buddibot, which is meant to act as a friend and guide. Instead, the Buddibot may represent modern distractions. The glasses and mundane could represent lesser quality games made in the modern era more for the purpose of generating ongoing profit than creating a compelling game. As a series that is all designed to speak to video game enthusiasts, it makes sense to end on this note with a call to creativity and fun from games before RNG and lootboxes.

While the package opens up to reveal a small glowing blue creature with multiple protrusions that ends up looking like a glittery Flubber, it does also resemble something else that may be more on trend for the series. This tiny creature is able to seamlessly upgrade vehicles, create wings, and generate impossible things for O to use in order to overcome any challenge. Putting that in the context of the series and the episode itself, it appears likely that this creature is actually meant to represent PlayStation controllers, with the blue light appearing reminiscent of the blue LED on PS5 controllers.

The shape is usually folded in a way that looks like two points downward, which resembles the shape of most video game controllers. The third protrusion seems to be a creative way to give this character a personality and make it more animated. But, considering the powers it has, the way it clings to O, and the fact that it conjures these upgrades and wings rather than transforming into them, it does seem most likely that it is meant to represent controllers for video games, adding to the symbolism and metaphors of this episode.

And of course, this all leads back to the PlayStation games that inspired it. The final episode of Secret Level season 1 features a large range of references and characters pulled straight from the catalog of games available for PlayStation. These include God of War, Shadow of the Collosus, LittleBigPlanet, Journey, and Helldivers II to name a few. These games are combined, despite their incredibly different styles and stories, in order to create a nostalgic feeling with the characters of popular franchises popping up and helping to remind both O and the audience about these beloved games and the memories that can be made when people pick up and play.

This is a solid ending to Secret Level, although it does mean the episode is not grounded in any one video game world. Instead, it is a representation of the real world, and so it becomes as effective as possible when the audience are people engaged in the hobby, with experience playing the games. And considering the connection to PlayStation and Sony Entertainment, these titles are largely for the people who opted to get a PlayStation over the competition, so it may be less effective as an ending for people who grew up with or favored games from other consoles. All things considered, Secret Level episode 15 is a great conclusion to the season.
