Here's every Matrix had a major impact on blockbuster cinema, from its existential themes to its incredible action. The movie was also one of the first to use the internet as part of its marketing campaign, and after its success, the Wachowski siblings soon set to work on two sequels. Anticipation could hardly have been higher for 2003's The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions, not to mention its many tie-ins like the Enter The Matrix video game and anime anthology The Animatrix.
As history has recorded, while the sequels were both hits, they proved extremely disappointing to many viewers. While both The Matrix sequels featured some amazing setpieces, their muddled storylines, tedious philosophical dialogue and Revolutions' anti-climatic ending put a dent in the legacy of the series. Still, hopes were high for 2021's The Matrix Resurrections, where Lana Wachowski returned as director and co-writer. While the film had its irers, it proved to be a surprise box-office failure, which has been attributed to its simultaneous release in theaters and HBO Max in addition to mixed reviews.
In the aftermath of The Matrix Resurrection's failure, the future of the series is unknown. Before g on for The Matrix Resurrections, Lana Wachowski mulled retiring from the business following the end of her Netflix series Sense8. This sci-fi saga revolved around 8 strangers from completely different backgrounds and countries who become psychically connected, allowing them to share everything from skills to emotions. The high cost of producing Sense8 led to its cancelation - though Netflix at least gave it a proper finale - but many Sense8 cast returned for Wachowskis' The Matrix Resurrections.
