added more customizable ways to filter notifications so that the essential notifications are delivered, but those that are not time-sensitive are blocked. These customizable filters were named Focus Modes, and they brought a slew of new notification management features to Apple products.

The company plans to put Focus Modes front-and-center on the iPhone with iOS 16 — adding new features and functionality — which makes it more likely that additional s will begin to test out the feature. iOS 16 is set to be released in Sept. 2022, bringing sweeping changes to how Lock Screens are created, saved and managed on the iPhone. A notable addition to the interface is the ability to link Lock Screens to Focus Modes so that the wallpaper automatically changes when a Focus Mode is set. It ties Focus Modes further into the operating system and daily use of an iPhone, providing more s with a reason to try out the notification filtering system.

By default, Focus Modes are linked to the 's iCloud , meaning that the notification filters are synced across multiple devices. If a switches their iPhone to Do Not Disturb mode, the change will also affect their other devices, like an Apple Watch, iPad, or Mac. This isn't ideal for most s because some devices do not need to have notification filtering enabled. For example, s might not want notifications to pop up on their iPad or Mac but could still need to see these notifications on their Apple Watch. Similarly, turning a Focus Mode off will disable the feature across all devices, and this is displayed with a push notification delivered in real time to any iCloud-connected device.

Luckily, there is a way to make Focus Mode settings different for each device, and it takes one trip to the settings menu. On an iPhone, open the Setting app and scroll down to the 'Focus' tab. It's located in the second large block of tabs, right under 'Notifications' and 'Sounds & Haptics.' Then, tap the 'Share Across Devices' toggle to turn off the feature. "Focus is shared across your devices," the subtext reads, "and turning one on for this device will turn it on for all of them." After this feature is disabled, s can set different focus modes for each device through the Control Center.
