Severance's Innies and Outies, the only recurring new cast member has been Sarah Bock's Miss Huang, given her importance to the severed floor.

However, Severance's sinister Exports Hall, also known as the Testing Floor. In Severance season 2, episode 7, this man was revealed as Doctor Mauer, as was his role as a Lumon employee and its ties to Mark's story.

Specifically Tied To Gemma's Fate As A Lumon Subject

Severance season 2, episode 7 provides a wealth of details about Gemma and her life, both before being taken by Lumon to serve as Ms. Casey and after. During the parts of Gemma's story that take place on Lumon's Testing Floor, Doctor Mauer is reintroduced as a dentist, whistling the same song he was in episode 5. However, Doctor Mauer is shown in several different scenarios, be it as Gemma's husband during a Christmas setting, a flight attendant on a crashing plane, or a regular Lumon doctor.

These different scenarios are all confined to different rooms on Lumon's Testing Floor, each with a distinct name attached to it. This all reveals more about Lumon's plan with Gemma and likely people after her, which includes creating several severed personalities for numerous places and situations. Each time Gemma enters one of the rooms, she becomes a different Innie and is convinced that she only ever spends time in that room, despite Severance season 2, episode 7 showing her in countless other scenarios.

Doctor Mauer is at the head of all of this. At one point, Mauer is shown talking with Drummond, Helena's bodyguard, who has played a part in Severance season 2, insisting that the severance barriers are holding and that the technology is working. It is clear Mauer is the man responsible for altering the severed chips so that Lumon can create multiple Innies in a singular person, with Gemma being the unlucky test subject for this new procedure.

To make Severance season 2, episode 7's Gemma story even more tragic, the show highlights what happened between her and Mark before her supposed death. The episode reveals their first meeting, their interactions after they started dating, and their life after marriage, during which they tried to have children. Heartbreakingly, these scenes transition into Gemma and Mark's visit to a fertility clinic after implied problems revealed that they could not conceive for one reason or another.

Regardless, this implies that Lumon has kept tabs on Gemma since before the company faked her death, potentially even manipulating her by promising her that Lumon's experiments will allow her to have children in the future.

The End For Gemma & Mauer Remains Clouded In Mystery

Perhaps the most interesting scene regarding Mauer and his relationship with Gemma came during one of the former's conversations with Drummond. Drummond insists that Mark has almost completed Severance's Cold Harbor file, which was also the name given to the only room Gemma has not visited on the Testing Floor. Drummond reminds Mauer that he will have to say goodbye to Gemma once Mark completes Cold Harbor, to which Mauer replies, "I am aware," and the two share a "For Kier" mantra.

The burning question here is why Mauer has to say goodbye to Gemma after Cold Harbor is completed. ittedly, the answer to this remains out of reach. It is still unclear what Cold Harbor is and what it will do to Gemma, just as it is still unanswered why Mark alone is so important to its completion. Whatever these answers prove to be, Severance season 2, episode 7 makes it clear that they will not be kind to Gemma's future, meaning that either every personality she has - including her own - will be removed or that she will be removed from Lumon entirely.
