In the streaming service hierarchy, Netflix reigns supreme. The streamer boasts the most subscribers by a significant margin, beating rival services like Prime Video, Disney+, Max, and Apple TV+. Not all Netflix movies and shows are hits with critics, but titles like Red Notice (2021), Squid Game, Wednesday, and Stranger Things are all monster successes in of viewership. Squid Game season 2, for example, garnered 126.2 million views in its first 11 days on the service.

Apple TV+ is a relatively small streaming service in of actual subscriber numbers, but it is home to a number of acclaimed titles. Slow Horses, for example, continues to be a hit, and shows like For All Mankind, Silo, and Ted Lasso are also successful. Though not really acclaimed, The Morning Show is also a major viewership draw. One recently-returned Apple TV+ show, however, has been both a critical darling and a viewership smash hit, and it just beat a Netflix title.

What Severance Beating The Night Agent Means For Apple TV+

Breaking Down The Apple Show's Victory

There are some important caveats here. Reelgood, for example, doesn't include specific viewership figures in its ranking, but Netflix data reveals that The Night Agent season 2, specifically, has generated 13.9 million views from January 23 – 26 (data from the 26th onwards isn't available yet). Reelgood bases its ranking on "the monitoring of 20 million monthly viewing decisions" from s in the U.S., but how it gathers data will differ from Netflix, which calculates total views by dividing hours viewed by a title's runtime.

That means that there are far more hours of The Night Agent for viewers to consume than hours of Severance, but the Apple show still won.

Despite the limitations in the data, Severance's victory is still a notable one, and it speaks to just how much of a phenomenon the show has become. On Rotten Tomatoes, Severance season 2 has a 98% critics' score and an 81% audience score compared to The Night Agent season 2's scores of 82% and 41%, and the sheer quality of the Apple show is undoubtedly a key factor in its success.

It's interesting, too, that Severance season 3 now feels like a sure thing.
