Apple TV+'s mind-bending mystery sci-fi series Severance finally returned after a multi-year break in early 2025, and Lumon will open for business in season 3 soon. Created for the small screen by Dan Erickson, the show concerns the employees of a corporation named Lumon Industries who agree to undergo a process called "severance" in which their work and personal life memories are surgically separated. Mark Scout (Adam Scott) is one such employee, but he soon finds that his "innie" and "outie" lives begin to overlap, which causes him to stumble across mysteries he was never meant to see.

The debut season of Severance was a bona fide smash-hit, and it became one of Apple TV+'s most successful original programs when it debuted in 2022. Unfortunately, a confluence of real-world events and various industry delays kept the mystery-box series off the air for nearly three years. Fortunately, the Ben Stiller-produced program didn't miss a beat, and caught up with Mark in season 2 as he falls deeper into the mysteries of Lumon and the corporation's impact on his "outie" life. The fate of Severance was never really in any jeopardy, and Apple TV+ opted to renew the show for a third season.

The Show Is Renewed For Season 3

Coming on the same day as the much-anticipated season 2 finale, the latest news confirms that Severance has been renewed for a third season. The decision isn't particularly surprising considering the tremendous success of the Apple TV+ original and discussions regarding season 3 had begun as soon as season 2 began airing episodes in early 2025. Though little is currently known about the season, the brains behind the operation are all set to return to their roles.

Producer Ben Stiller, star Adam Scott, series creator Dan Erickson, and Apple TV+ programming head Matt Cherniss issued the following statements regarding season 3:

Stiller: Making ‘Severance’ has been one of the most creatively exciting experiences I’ve ever been a part of. While I have no memory of this, I’m told making Season 3 will be equally enjoyable, though any recollection of these future events will be forever and irrevocably wiped from my memory as well.

Scott: I couldn’t be more excited to get back to work with Ben, Dan, the incredible cast and crew, Apple and the whole ‘Severance’ team. Oh hey also — not a huge deal — but if you see my innie, please don’t mention any of this to him. Thanks.

Erickson: The idea of getting to make more ‘Severance’ with the greatest cast and crew on Earth is more thrilling to me than all the world’s finger traps combined. I can’t wait to continue spreading woe, frolic, dread and malice with these truly incredible people.

Cheriss: What Ben, Dan, Adam and the talented cast and crew behind ‘Severance’ have brought to the screen is undeniable magic. We’re so proud to be the home for this brilliant series and look forward to audiences experiencing what’s in store for Season 3.

Severance Season 3 Is Confirmed

Apple TV+ Has Ordered More Episodes Of Severance

Though Apple TV+ has scored a few big hits before, there's little doubt that Severance has come to represent the tech brand's TV image. Because of this, discussions regarding season 3 were already underway when season 2 premiered, and it seemed like it was only a matter of time before the show would be renewed. The order did finally come on the same day as the season 3 finale, and Apple TV+ has officially renewed Severance for a third season. Almost nothing is known about the season for now, and a timeline remains elusive.

Severance season 2 premiered on January 17, 2025, and concluded on March 21.

One thing that is almost guaranteed about Severance season 3 is that it won't take nearly as long to arrive as its immediate predecessor. Season 2 was delayed by the 2023 Hollywood strikes, and a confluence of events that derailed production for months. Season 3 isn't expected to face such challenges, and considering the show's popularity, will likely be rushed to the screen sooner rather than later.

Who Returns For Work In Season 3?

Though nothing is confirmed regarding Severance season 3, the series has paved a pretty clear path for many of its returning characters. It's assumed that everyman Mark Scout (played by Adam Scott) will be back, since it is his personal descent into the mysteries of Lumon that has carried the series thus far. His fellow "innies" and "outies" are expected to return as well, including Zach Cherry's Dylan George and Britt Lower's Helly Riggs. Furthermore, Mark's other co-workers like Irving Bailiff (played by John Turturro) will probably be back alongside Tramell Tillman's Seth Milchick.

Severance Season 3 Story Details

Lumon's True Purpose Is Slowly Being Revealed

Miss Huang speaking to Mark Irving Dylan and Helly in the hallway in Severance season 2

Because Severance is the ultimate in mind-bending TV, it's almost impossible to guess exactly what will happen in season 3. However, the finale of season 2 painted a somewhat clearer picture of the future of the series, though anything is liable to happen in the Severance universe. Mark's innie chose to stay in Lumon, and this introduces an interesting dynamic between the two halves of his persona. He made this choice to stay with Helly, proving his inner half is a completely separate person compared to his outie.

With the Cold Harbor file completed, Lumon's true intention of destroying all negative feelings is a bit clearer, even if the answer is just as mind-bending as everything else in the series. It also sets up the next phase in the company's battle against its enemies, and Lumon could take the fight to the outies and anyone (especially Cobel) who dares to oppose them. Whatever happens in Severance season 3, more unexpected twists and turns are surely right around the corner.
