None of the characters on Sex and the City are known for their criminal activity. But there were a few instances here and there throughout the series where the things they did might have resulted in them being jailed if the police had discovered them. They were also sometimes guilty of actions that should have been unacceptable, even if they weren’t technically breaking the law.

Jail might be a harsh punishment, but nonetheless, they shouldn’t have gotten away with their actions. From buying illegal goods to physical assault, here are 10 times that the characters on Sex and the City probably should have gone to jail.

When Berger Sped On His Motorbike Just To Scare Carrie

Jack Berger was probably Carrie’s most overrated boyfriend. Along with a plethora of other flaws, he felt so threatened by Carrie’s success that he allowed his emotions to completely take over and sped on his motorbike with Carrie on his back to the point of terrifying her. Not only should the relationship police have come to take him away for intimidating his girlfriend to show her how manly he was, but the real police should have also taken action to stop him from endangering other lives on the road.

When Carrie Snooped Around Ben’s Apartment Without His Permission

Because Carrie’s temporary fling Ben invited her into his apartment, the police probably couldn’t legally do anything about it when she began snooping around his things. But this is still creepy behavior that would definitely make any reasonably minded person run the other way, just like Ben did. Carrie was only looking for something to prove that Ben had a flaw, but it still seems to wrong to go through somebody else’s property without their permission, even if permission to be in the house has been granted.

When Samantha Bought A Fake Fendi Bag In L.A.

Buying a fake Fendi allowed Samantha to look the part at Hugh Hefner’s party at the Playboy Mansion when the girls visited Los Angeles. But that doesn’t change the fact that purchasing the bag was breaking the law. Pirated goods are a no-no, even in Los Angeles. And Samantha was never in any legal trouble for having the bag, but it did indirectly result in her and the girls getting kicked out of Hefner’s party.

When Barkley Secretly Taped All His Conquests

Carrie and Barkley looking in the same direction in Sex and the City

Carrie was involved with quite a few questionable guys over the course of the show. One of the worst was a friend, not a lover, called Barkley, from the first season. His crime? Secretly filming the women he slept with. Regardless of whether he shared the footage afterward or not, secretly filming someone in such a vulnerable act is definitely deserving of jail time. It’s hard to believe Carrie wasn’t creeped out to the max by this guy.

When Arthur Punched Strangers In The Face

The other women on the show also dated their fair share of problematic guys. Charlotte had to deal with a few terrible men but one of the worst had to be Arthur, who appeared in the first episode of the third season.

Riddled with anger issues, Arthur had a habit of punching strangers when they caused him the slightest inconvenience. This isn’t just a crime in the figurative sense and this guy should seriously not have been allowed on the streets.

When Samantha Impersonated Annabelle Bronstein

Samantha finding the card of Annabelle Bronstein and using it to gain access to Soho House was a good thing for her friends, who also gained access to the rooftop pool through the card. But it wasn’t fair on Annabel Bronstein, the rightful owner of the card. No matter how funny her British accent is, most people would consider Samantha’s actions here as fraudulent.

When Samantha Pretended To Be Lucy Liu To Get A Birkin

Impersonating Annabelle Bronstein isn’t the only time that Samantha’s failed to be honest to get something that she wants. While briefly working for Lucy Liu, she told the people at Hermes that the Birkin bag she’d ordered was actually for her new client, even though it was for her.

While this isn’t something that would necessarily get someone to jail in the real world, the dishonesty combined with the verbal abuse that Samantha dishes out in the episode is problematic. No wonder Liu fired her.

When Aleksandr Petrovsky Slapped Carrie

Some fans of Sex and the City would argue that Aleksandr Petrovsky didn’t really mean to slap Carrie in Paris when the two got into an argument on the night of his exhibition opening. But he did slap her and domestic violence of any kind should never be ignored or excused.

When Samantha Harassed Her Masseuse

When Samantha got wind that her masseuse was getting sexually involved with his other clients, she assumed that he would be willing to get involved with her too. She harassed him by inappropriately touching him without even considering what he wanted, which is pretty problematic. If the roles were reversed, a male client inappropriately touching a female masseuse should definitely be punished. The same standard applies.

When Carrie Kept Smoking In The Cab After The Driver Told Her Not To

Although this is a minor transgression that probably wouldn’t get a person sent to jail in real life, continuing to smoke in a cab after being told not to is pretty disrespectful. Carrie refused to put her cigarette out when the girls were having a serious conversation in the back of a cab in the first season because the subject of their discussion was so intense. That might not really deserve jail time but it shouldn’t be acceptable either, considering that cab is the driver’s livelihood.
