Ncuti Gatwa opens up about his experience working on Sex Education, revealing that it wasn't always a great time. After much speculation, the hit Netflix coming-of-age series is coming to an end after four seasons. This comes after several key stars confirmed their departures, and as others, such as Gatwa and Emma Mackey, boost their careers with buzzy projects outside of Sex Education.

“It was very hard; it was such a big show. When you’re telling stories that haven’t been seen before, there’s always a battle as to how to tell them. It wasn’t always joyous. I feel like we’ve outgrown it and we’ve given everything we can to it."

Sex Education is one of the most beloved shows on Netflix thanks to its nuanced depiction of sexuality, including the joys and struggles of it during teenage years. Over the course of its run, it has tackled exciting and unique premises, making it easily accessible to a wider audience. Despite having clear main characters, it also has a diversified storytelling, which means that each person gets their own time in the spotlight. Considering how lauded Sex Education is, it's surprising and saddening that some original actors struggled during their time working in the show.

Creator Laurie Nunn has explained that Sex Education season 4 seems like the perfect time to end the series. In of narrative, it is approaching its organic end, with Otis Milburn and his friends set to finish secondary school and move on to university. For Nunn, instead of trying to stretch out Sex Education past its prime is not an option. She did promise, however, that the finale will have satisfying send-offs.

It's worth noting, however, that when Sex Education returns, it will be significantly different for a couple of reasons. Firstly, its backdrop will no longer be Moordale Secondary School after the academic organization was forced to close at the end of season 3. Additionally, Sex Education season 4 will feature a smaller cast, with several actors already confirming their non-involvement. Because of that, it seems quite clear that Sex Education has reached its natural endpoint.
