Mindy Kaling’s The Sex Lives Of College Girls season 2 sees Bela and Eric get together - but they need to break up by the end of the season. The show follows Kimberly, Bela, Leighton, and Whitney as they try to navigate college, adulthood, and sex. Bela is a sex-positive, self-assured, promising comedian. Bela met Eric at her university’s comedy newspaper, and a brief flirty conversation in the season 1 finale revealed the potential for romance. The show’s audience was eager to see what would happen between them in season 2, but they didn’t have to wait long since they got together at the end of season 2, episode 1.

It’s Too Soon For Bela And Eric To Get Together

Some believe Kaling self-inserts characters and gives them similar love interests. In Never Have I Ever, it's Devi and Ben; in The Sex Lives Of College Girls, it's Bela and Eric. With this in mind, it seems clear that Bela and Eric are meant to be together as an endgame pairing in the HBO Max show. But, a happy couple with no conflict makes for boring television, so when couples get together too soon, they risk becoming dull or toxic. Devi and Paxton also notably couldn't escape this phenomenon. Once they got together, it wasn't long before the writers put obstacles in their way, until even the audience was tired of their relationship.

Bela And Eric Should End Season 2 As Friends

As of season 2, episode 4, Bela and Eric are only friends with benefits, so if they end their relationship now, they could preserve their friendship. This would allow the romance to re-set and enable the audience to see them fall for each other using the friends-to-lovers trope. The course of Devi and Ben’s relationship in Never Have I Ever is an excellent example of how their romance could be saved in the HBO Max show. Ben and Devi started and ended their relationship early, then became friends and realized they still had feelings for each other. Now, they can end their show as a couple.

The tension and build-up before a couple get together is usually the most satisfying part of a romance, so it’s surprising Bela and Eric get together so quickly. Nearly every one of Kaling’s projects features a romance, and she does it well, so it’s likely Kaling is being purposeful in their timing. Perhaps Bela and Eric’s chemistry made them too obvious, so she decided to have them get together immediately to throw people off. Based on The Sex Lives Of College Girls ratings the HBO Max show is probably here to stay, so Bela and Eric should break up in season 2 if they're to end up together.
