While there is something relatable about every episode of season 1 of The Sex Lives Of College Girls, the HBO Max show also offers up a humorous look at getting used to freshman year. Kimberly, Leighton, Bela, and Whitney want to succeed at Essex College, and there are many moments when they make fans laugh, whether they're trying to be funny or not.
From Kimberly not even trying to be humorous to Bela chatting about her smart writing ideas, The Sex Lives Of College Girls has many hilarious lines that prove that these characters are trying their best to adjust to life at college.
Kimberly Talking About Leighton And Social Media
"She's made it very clear she doesn't follow me on social media"
The most likable Sex Lives Of College Girls characters are hilarious, and while Kimberly might have some learning and growing to do in season 1, she does make some funny jokes throughout these 10 episodes.
When Kimberly is excited that she posted a video of herself wearing a dress and Nico commented, Whitney asks if Leighton saw it, and Kimberly its that Leighton doesn't follow her. For most of season 1, Leighton acts much cooler than her roommates and they accept that she's going to eventually come around, and it's definitely moving when she does.
Whitney Insults Leighton
"You look like the perfume lady at Bloomingdales."
Whitney and Leighton both have different thoughts and feelings about going to a sorority mixer. While Leighton is dreaming of being accepted, Whitney isn't so sure that this is the right place for her. This storyline allows viewers to see that while Leighton is desperate to fit in and feel accepted, Whitney is comfortable being herself.
When Whitney tells Leighton that she doesn't like her fancy outfit, she has a hilarious burn for her, and Leighton responds, "That is the meanest thing you could've said to me.”
Kimberly Tells Bela That She's Funny
"You're like the funniest person I know. It's like living with Bugs Bunny."
Part of the fun of watching The Sex Lives Of College Girls is seeing how the four main characters relate to each other more and more as they connect.
While this quote seems kind of insulting and strange, and no one would want to be compared to Bugs Bunny, Bela can tell that Kimberly means well and that she's trying to help her feel better at a time when she's insecure and concerned. What makes this quote stand out so much is Bela's response: she says, "I know you mean that as a compliment, so thank you."
Leighton Talking To The Essex College Counselor
"I know- you seem like such a joy."
Leighton isn't the smartest Sex Lives of College Girls character, at least not at the beginning of season 1. She relies on the fact that her family has money too often and thinks that she can buy her way out of anything.
In this hilarious exchange, Leighton complains to a counselor at Essex College that her former best friends from high school don't want to live with her. She says that she's surprised that they would have requested that they room without her, and the counselor has the perfect dry, sarcastic comment ready about Leighton seeming like a lovely, happy person. This is a great joke, and thankfully, Leighton does prove herself to be a much nicer person.
Lila Tells A Customer She Can't Help Him
"Excuse me, we're gabbing here."
While Lila isn't so sure about Kimberly at first, they become friends as Lila shares that she has been sleeping with Nico and that she really likes him.
With this memorable line, Lila tells a customer that she can't help them because she's gossiping and chatting, which is definitely not what they want to hear. This quote drives home how Lila and Kimberly each other and just want the best for one another and always want to talk about the ups and downs of Kimberly's dating life.
Bela Talks About A Writing Idea
"I’ve been working on this piece where Billie Eilish raps a warranty page of a printer manual."
Fans love Bela's strong and comionate character, and it's fascinating hearing her writing ideas.
When Bela shares the piece that she wants to write for The Catullan, her idea is both hilarious and intelligent. This is definitely a story that people would want to hear as it's a fresh and unique concept. Through this one quote, Bela shows viewers that she's determined to succeed in the comedy writing world, and everyone is along for the ride.
Leighton's Response When Bela Offers Her A Donut
"I don't eat for enjoyment"
What works so well about the unique characters on The Sex Lives Of College Girls is that everyone has their own sense of humor.
In one sweet scene, Bela and Leighton start to bond when they walk around their college town, and Bela offers Leighton some of her amazing donut. Leighton could simply say no, or that she's not hungry, but she has a great response that allows fans to learn more about her. From this funny but also sad line, viewers realize that Leighton's high school self was all about being cool and popular, and that she's going to go on a new journey this year.
Kimberly Goes Shopping
"This looks like something Shania Twain would wear."
Kimberly is amazed by a lot of things at Essex College, especially the opportunity to wear some fancy clothes. Kimberly's sense of style is charming as she still feels very young and she associates sparkles and shine with dres.
When Kimberly goes shopping, she compares the dress that she's holding to a Shania Twain outfit, and this is the perfect thing for her to say. It proves to viewers that she's trying her best to seem cool and sophisticated, but she's out of her element and not yet comfortable in her own skin.
Bela Asks What Lies Everyone Has Told Their Parents
"Before our families get here, I think we should all quickly share the lies we've told them that we'd like each other to corroborate."
Of all the ways that The Sex Lives Of College Girls gets college right, Bela's plotline is the best one. She struggles with telling her mom and dad that she isn't majoring in science like they thought and that she wants to be a comedy writer.
While Bela's story arc is realistic and at times sad, she makes everyone at the dorm meeting very happy when she asks if they have lied to their parents. The scene gets even more memorable when Leighton replies that she told her dad that she has been buying textbooks at Net-a-Porter.
Kimberly Talking To Her New Co-Workers
"I am sure we will have ‘latte’ fun."
Kimberly is one of those people who is funny without meaning to be at all, and when she talks to her new co-workers at Sips cafe, she makes this awful joke.
Right away, Canaan and Lila wish that she wouldn't make silly puns or try to make something hilarious when it's not, which just makes Kimberly even funnier. Thankfully, by the end of season 1, Kimberly bonds with her co-workers and they begin to look out for and each other.
