In a show that was already pretty innovative for its time, Samantha Jones still consistently proved that she was ahead of her time. All the ladies in Sex and the City were unique in their own way, with Sam essentially becoming the personification of a liberated woman, who wasn't afraid to express her sexuality and to call out double standards where she saw them.
Samatha had her flaws, just like every other character on the show. But she was also strong, independent, and an amazing friend not just to Carrie, but Charlotte and Miranda as well. There were plenty of iconic Samantha Jones moments throughout the course of Sex and the City and the two movies that followed, so let's take a look at ten times she absolutely won at life.
When She Made Herself Her Nº1 Priority
Fans of Samantha and Smith were heartbroken when by the end of the first movie, their relationship came to an end. And while it was definitely heartbreaking to see those two go their separate ways, it showed everyone just how well Samantha lived life.
She was no longer happy and fulfilled in the relationship, and instead of staying for the sake of staying, she made the hard decision to walk away because she loved herself deeply. Her own happiness was her number one priority, and she wasn't afraid to it that to herself, Smith, and everyone else.
When She Challenged Her Friends On Their Comments
Samantha wasn't afraid to express her sexuality and satisfy her desires. For many years, she simply wasn't interested in a romantic relationship and preferred to have casual sex with several partners, including a woman, Maria.
This made her the target of several snide remarks on the part of Miranda, Carrie, and Charlotte, particularly the latter. Samantha was always quick to challenge them on their bigoted and sexist views, which were many times borderline hypocritical.
When She Stood Her Ground In Regards To Having Children
While today women who choose to not have children are not the target of as many attacks as they were in the past, the idea that in order to be fulfilled a woman needs to have and raise kids still persists. And it was very much alive back in the late 90s and early 2000s when the show took place.
Samantha had none of that, and she always remained firm in her stance of not wanting children. She went as far as throwing an "I don't have a baby" shower just because she could.
When She Let Everyone Know She Could Wear Whatever She Wanted
Fashion was a big part of Sex and the City, with each of the women showcasing a different take on their individual styles. Samantha was arguably the most stylish and fashion-forward one, although not quite as unique as Carrie.
And Samantha wasn't scared of dressing exactly she wanted, regardless of her age. She wore what she liked and what made her feel good, not paying any mind to what other people would think. This was made even clearer during the second movie when she stood up to a store clerk who deemed an outfit "too young" for Sam.
When She Told It Like It Is About "The One"
Charlotte York was always the traditional romantic of the group, and Carrie, although she would never it it, was completely in love with the idea of an epic romance, while being addicted to the pain at the same time. The concept of a soul-mate and the idea of finding "the one" were often discussed during their meetings.
However, Samantha never refrained from telling her friends the truth. Soul mates don't exist, "the one" doesn't exist. There are plenty of people out there you can fall in love with, and living your life in search of one specific person is a waste of time. In the words of Samantha herself "the right guy is an illusion. Star living your lives".
When She Called Out Double Standards
Everyone is aware of the typical stereotypes surrounding gender. Men can sleep with as many people as they want, but women will be deemed sluts and promiscuous. If a woman gets emotional, she's hysterical, but a man is a strong businessman.
When fighting for the right to do Richard's PR, Samantha called out all of these ridiculous and outdated views, which eventually granted her the spot.
When She Let The World Know How To Live Life The Right Way
Samantha had her own philosophy and outlook on life, and there's a lot to learn from the way she simpled existed in this world. She loved her job and fought to have a career that she enjoyed. She had a fulfilling life with friends she adored.
And most importantly, she didn't let anyone judge her. As Sam herself puts it, "if I worried what every b**** says about me, I'd never leave the house".
When She Was An Incredible Friend
Although her friends could be extremely judgemental about her life and her choices, the four women were, at the end of the day, best friends - and to a certain extent, each other's soulmates.
Samantha always made room in her life and schedule to be there for her friends, especially Carrie. She didn't judge her when she cheated on Aidan, and was always there to offer solid advice to all of the girls. She even gave Miranda the hair appointment she'd been waiting for forever after she has a kid.
When She Let Her Guard Down
Even though she wasn't interested in love, Samantha eventually learned to let her guard down, and open herself up to the idea of being in a relationship. And even though Richard broke her heart, that didn't stop her.
She eventually had a relationship with Maria and went on to fall in love and be with Smith, in spite of always professing her disdain for typical relationships. It made her a more complex and well-rounded character, bossy, independent, but also loving and caring.
When She Refused To Let People Judge Her
Leave it to Samantha to be the hero women everywhere need. It's been established before how Samantha was never afraid to stand up people, including her friends, where her sex life was concerned.
But one of her best lines came during the episode where Carrie walked in on her having an intimate moment with a man and started acting weird and making distasteful remarks about the situation. Samanthas's response? "I will not be judged by you or society". An icon!
