Warning: contains spoilers for Shang-Chi #4!

Since taking leadership of the Five Weapons Society, Avengers against him.

While Shang-Chi's efforts to take over his father's criminal operation and turn it into a force for good are commendable, Zheng Zu was one of the most ruthless villains on Earth, and Shang-Chi's former allies have become increasingly concerned that he's been corrupted by taking on his father's legacy. At the same time, Shang-Chi has clashed with heroes like Wolverine, Captain America, and the Fantastic Four as part of his efforts to reunite his family and counteract some of Zheng Zu's more harmful edicts, and the heroes have started to spread the word that he can no longer be trusted.

At the end of Shang-Chi #4 from Gene Luen Yang and Dike Ruan, Mister Fantastic ed Captain America following the Five Weapons Society's unapproved use of his team's Negative Zone teleporter, ominously saying, "We need to talk about Shang-Chi." While these rumbling alone were bad news, Marvel's solicit information has revealed that the  Shang-Chi #5 (also from Yang and Ruan, releasing October 13) will see its titular hero offered a stolen Iron Man suit to utilize in his war on crime, and hints Tony Stark isn't going to react well when he finds out.

Shang Chi Iron Man

If there's one thing guaranteed to enrage Tony Stark, it's stealing his armor. Past stories such as Armor Wars have seen Tony track down and destroy suits illegally based on his designs, even when doing so actively went against American interests. Perhaps no other circumstance is as guaranteed to get a rise out of Iron Man, but Mister Fantastic and Captain America's involvement also opens up another reason for Shang-Chi to worry.

Marvel has hinted that Tony, Steve, and Reed may have reformed their secret Illuminati team. The Illuminati are a group of well-respected heroes who convene to deal with large-scale threats in secret, bringing together magic, science, advanced technology, and mutant powers to address only the biggest threats. While the team disbanded long ago, X-Men #21 hinted it had reformed to address mutantkind's unprecedented terraforming of Mars, with Iron Man, Mister Fantastic, Captain America, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and Namor the Sub-Mariner among its number.

Illuminati at Hellfire Gala

An organization with the reach and history of the Five Weapons Society fits the bill for the Illuminati's involvement, and enraging Iron Man would set the majority of against Shang-Chi (especially with the recent death of Doctor Strange.) While the Illuminati tend to act in secret, there are many ways for them to strike at Shang-Chi - most easily by assembling the Avengers to take him down (an easy feat given Iron Man and Captain America are currently on the team, with Black Panther as its leader.) The 'Shang-Chi vs the Marvel Universe' arc is set to end with issue 6, in which Shang will face Thor, but that may only be the beginning of his problems. If Shang-Chi's newly acquired Iron Man armor sets Tony Stark against him, it's likely he'll become Enemy Number One to all Earth's heroes, and the Avengers could end up being the least of his problems.
