the film's post-credit scenes until the day of filming. Shang-Chi represents the MCU's first Asian-led superhero film and opened on September 3rd to simultaneous critical acclaim and great success at the box-office, decimating Labor Day records in its opening weekend. The film stars Liu as the eponymous hero who, alongside his best friend Katy (played by Awkwafina) is dragged back into the shadowy underworld of the secretive Ten Rings Organization by his father Wenwu (Tony Leung).
In typical MCU fashion, the film featured two post-credits scenes which set-up and teased what is to come later in Phase 4. The first scene showed Shang-Chi and Katy meeting with Benedict Wong's Wong, Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner, and Brie Larson's Captain Marvel to discuss the origins of the powerful Ten Rings, in a scene that effectively welcomed the characters into the wider MCU. The other, far more brief, showed Shang-Chi's sister Xialing as the new head of the Ten Rings organization, implementing a great deal of change to the organization and teasing their presence later down the line.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, director and writer Destin Daniel Cretton discussed the post-credit scenes, as well as having the opportunity to work with Larson again after the actress appeared in a number of the director's previous films such The Glass Castle and Short Term 12. When asked whether Liu and Awkwafina knew who they would working with in that scene or what it would entail, Cretton revealed that they did but likely not until the day of filming itself. You can read the director's full comment below:
"Yes, they did. By the time they shot. I think they didn't know up until the day that they were doing the scene, but yes. I Simu walking onto set holding the sides, looking at me going... But there's two things happening that emotionally are so connected in the MCU and on set. There is the ushering in of these characters into a group of established superheroes. But in real life, there is an ushering in of these actors into a community of established actors. And we could not have chosen a more perfect group of actors to do both. Both those characters and the actors, someone like Mark Ruffalo and Brie Larson and Benedict Wong being there to welcome Awkwafina and Simu into the fold, it was a very special moment."
Cretton also revealed that only Wong was on-set when the scene was initially shot, with Ruffalo and Larson being added in later. This is unsurprising considering that the latter two appeared as holograms and required CGI to facilitate the effect. Still, it's interesting to hear that the stars weren't aware of what exactly would be happening until the day of filming, leaving them with very little time to prepare. They managed to pull it off though, and the scene excellently balances its intrigue with its humor.
Marvel are notoriously secretive when it comes to their post-credit scenes, often not filming them until much later in production. The shawarma scene in Shang-Chi's post-credit scene. As for what the scene itself means for the MCU, that remains to be seen but fans are undoubtedly excited to see what's in store next for the characters, especially before the inevitable Shang-Chi sequel.
