A real-life private investigator settles the debate regarding whether Knives Out franchise is the better detective. Murder mystery movies and TV shows have been popular for decades, and the character of Holmes, created by Arthur Conan Doyle, has remained a fixture of the genre in various incarnations. Recently, a new detective has emerged onto the scene in the form of Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc, who has now used his genius to solve murders in Knives Out (2019) and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022).
In a recent video for Wired, private investigator Mike LaCorte answers a question from the internet regarding whether Holmes or Blanc comes out on the top as the more effective detective. LaCorte reveals that, while Blanc has the edge in a modern setting, if both were put back in Holmes' era in the late 19th century, it's Holmes who is the better investigator due to his fieldwork and interviewing skills. Check out LaCorte's comment below:
“Mr. Blanc is more suited currently. However, if we were to bring Mr. Blanc back to Sherlock Holmes’ times, then Sherlock Holmes would win hands down. Modern investigators sometimes can be a bit lazy.
"Some Sherlock Holmes techniques, getting out there, speaking to people, doing the covert questioning, statements, that type of fieldwork to supplement whatever you’ve found through all of your datasets can be overlooked by some modern detectives. Doing the fieldwork in combination with what you can do at your fingertips makes you a complete investigator.”
What's Next For Sherlock Holmes & Benoit Blanc
Both Characters Will Return
Both Blanc and Holmes are set to return in various forms. Blanc will next appear in Johnson's Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which is due out in 2025. This film marks the second of Johnson's two contracted Netflix sequels to his 2019 franchise-starter, so it's not yet clear if there will be a fourth entry. The premise, however, as with Holmes, means there is no shortage of mysteries he could solve in future films.

Sherlock Season 5: Will It Happen? Everything We Know
The modern adaptation Sherlock went off the air after a controversial fourth season in 2017, and fans have been clamoring for a season 5 ever since.
Holmes, on the other hand, could end up returning in several different iterations. A young Sherlock Holmes show is in development at Prime Video with Guy Ritchie directing and Hero Fiennes Tiffin set to star. In addition to this Ritchie project, the world of his Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes movies could also be returning. Though it's been 13 years since the last entry, there has been continued interest in seeing a potential Sherlock Holmes 3 come to life, including from Downey Jr.'s camp. These two projects are in addition to a potential Sherlock season 5 starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes movies take place in the late 1800s while BBC's Sherlock takes place in the modern day. It hasn't yet been officially confirmed when the Young Sherlock series takes place.
Our Take On LaCorte's Holmes vs. Blanc Ruling
Holmes Is The Original Pop Culture Detective
Holmes is perhaps the most iconic pop culture detective in history, and has solved dozens of cases across various mediums since his creation. Though director Rian Johnson has cited Agatha Christie murder mysteries as a major inspiration for his Knives Out films, Blanc, the man, is undoubtedly heavily inspired by Holmes. As the original and most iconic detective, it's no surprise that Holmes emerges victorious in a head-to-head. What would be truly interesting, though, would be seeing both of these characters in the same time period working against each other to solve a case.
