A Sherlock ran for four seasons from 2010 to 2017, as each installment had three, movie-length episodes that introduced a series of whodunnit mysteries. The show was nominated for copious Emmy Awards, including acting, writing, and Outstanding Television Movie.
Speaking to Deadline, Vertue addressed Sherlock's future, stating that she and her team "love that show and there is a future for it." However, she noted that the revival would need the actors wanting to do it and didn't indicate any active development. Vertue is still hanging on to aspects of the show, saying she has "still got the set in storage somewhere." Check out the full quote below:
Sue Vertue: We love that show and there is a future for it. One day. Maybe. If everyone wants to do it. I’ve still got the set in storage somewhere, which is probably rotten, to be honest with you. It’s just getting everybody aligned, it’s getting the actors to want to do it.
What This Update Means For Sherlock's Future
Busy Actor Schedules Could Get In The Way Of A Sherlock Return
This new update comes after Sherlock co-creator and Mycroft Holmes actor Mark Gatiss spoke out about his desire to make a movie. He said, “We’d like to make a film but trying to get everyone together is very difficult.” Vertue expresses a similar statement in that the actors' participation is the biggest barrier in making any continuation. After all, since making their Sherlock debuts, Cumberbatch and Freeman have played characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) among other key roles.

Sherlock Season 5 Is More Difficult Because Of 1 Perfect Line From The Final Episode
BBC Sherlock's season 5 shouldn't happen because of a perfect line delivered by Scotland Yard Detective, Greg Lestrade in The Final Problem.
Still, Vertue's comment is a hopeful sign that a new season could happen. Season 4, the most recent, was divisive for audiences at the time of its release. This could dissuade some viewers from being interested in the show, but some might hope for another chance for Sherlock to improve and restore its quality from earlier seasons. It does not sound like audience interest is a concern of either Gatiss or Vertue, but it could impact the series.
BBC's Sherlock Is Not The Only Holmesian Project Up In The Air
Sherlock Holmes 3 Is Still Yet To Come
Even with Vertue's hope, I am not confident that Sherlock is returning any time soon, given how long it has taken thus far. Reflecting on this also makes me realize how Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes 3 has still never come to fruition. Hence, vague updates like these just reengage the way for both projects. Hopefully, Vertue can rally the troops to get the Sherlock season 5 we've all been waiting for.
A prequel series, Young Sherlock, is actively in development at Prime Video with Ritchie involved as a director.

In this incarnation of Sherlock from creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman assume the roles of Sherlock and Watson as they establish their partnership and begin solving strange mysteries throughout the U.K. and beyond. Set in a more 2010's modern setting, Sherlock's eccentric and complex nature is accentuated as he solves seemingly supernatural crimes with unparalleled intellect while struggling to connect with others on a human level. Meanwhile, Watson blogs the stories summarizing their cases while building a strained but caring friendship with his new partner.
