Silk: Spider Society Cancellation Explained & Potential Future
Silk Seemingly Ran Into Creative Issues
The cancellation of Silk: Spider Society seems to boil down to creative differences, as the writers' room for the Marvel drama didn't reopen right after the end of the Writers Guild of America 2023 strike. According to Deadline, Angela Kang, who was the showrunner, and her writers had been given notes from the higher-ups to "reconfigure the show" to not be "hanging so heavily on the central character" of Cindy Moon, aka Silk. Despite a positive update on Silk: Spider Society last year, the show's chances were "script-dependant," as the project had reportedly gone through three different iterations.
Kang's more recent pitch for Silk: Spider Society had apparently been well-received, but "after deliberations where to allocate resources on genre IP projects — which are inherently pricey — a decision was made" to go forward with Cage's Noir TV show, reportedly due to its more male-skewing perspective. As of right now, the Silk: Spider Society showrunner will keep working on projects with Amazon MGM Studios as part of Kang's overall deal. Whether Kang may develop a new Spider-Man-related live-action show for the studio remains to be seen.
A Silk live-action movie had previously been in development at Sony Pictures before getting retooled as a television series.
However, despite not happening on MGM+ and Prime Video, Deadline noted that Sony Pictures Television Studios is looking to shop Silk: Spider Society around to other platforms. Whether or not Disney+ could be a potential option remains to be seen, as this could be a way to work Silk into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As of right now, however, Silk: Spider Society s the list of many scrapped superhero TV shows over the last decade.
