Thanks to fan demand, the industry heavyweights to write each issue, including the likes of Chip Zdarsky, Jeff Lemire, Ed Brisson, and Kelly Thompson. The shared universe of The Silver Coin was only planned to be a five-issue arc, but thanks to the positive , the anthology will now be ongoing.
Only two issues of The Silver Coin have come out so far in comic book stores. The stories all take place in a supernatural world. In the first issue, the story kicks off in 1978 when a failing rock band's luck changes when they find a strange silver coin in a tale penned by Zdarsky (Captain Marvel), follows a bullied girl at a summer camp who experiences the silver coin's violence.
Along with Swamp Thing), Matthew Rosenberg (Uncanny X-Men, The Punisher), and Vita Ayala (Xena: Warrior Princess, James Bond).
This horror anthology is particularly unique not only because of its stellar response after only two issues, but also because it is an artist at the helm with an assortment of writers rather than the other way around. When talking about the anthology's extension, Walsh said: "I am beyond excited to continue telling stories in the world of The Silver Coin. The response to the first arc has been overwhelming and it's provided me with the opportunity to bring in an all-new group of incredible talent for more tales of terror... I'm very lucky to be working with people that consistently elevate my own work and push me to grow as an artist and writer. Josh, Ram, Matt, and Vita are all such insightful, creative and unique voices in the world of comics... I can't WAIT to show off the horrors that we are crafting together." Image Comics really seems to be on a roll with horror anthology series, also releasing HAHA around the same time as The Silver Coin.
The Silver Coin #3, written by Brisson about a home invasion and the coin leading its owners away from the law and into something much darker, will be out on June 16, 2021. Issue 4, written by Jeff Lemire and taking place in 2467 where the world has been buried and a scavenger finds a silver coin, will be out on July 14, 2021. For the fifth issue, out August 11, 2021, Walsh will be pulling double duties as both the writer and artist, which seems to hint at a major culmination in the world of The Silver Coin by exploring the coin's origins in a small New England town where a woman is accused of being a witch. Besides the main cover by Walsh, there will also be a variant by Maya McKibbin. Considering how happy the series is to jump around throughout time, there is plenty of potential for an indefinite number of stories. It will be interesting to see how long this series will go on for and if it will the ranks of the best horror anthology comics of all time.
