When canceled yet again, concluding with its seventh season on Comedy Central last fall, it was another sad goodbye to the Planet Express crew. Technically, there's always hope for another revival, but even creators David X. Cohen and Matt Groening must be tired of writing finales for their futuristic comedy.
And while Futurama will always live on in the hearts and minds of fans - and in syndication, DVD boxsets, and the pages of Bongo Comics - Fry, Leela, Bender, and the whole gang will have one final televised bow before they're gone. This Sunday, Futurama will cross over with that other Groening cartoon you might be familiar with - Simpsorama."
This isn't the first crossover The Simpsons have done this season, having earlier appeared in the read our review). And while that episode toyed with the differences and similarities between the two animated families, a crossover between Futurama and The Simpsons should have even more common ground to cover.
In the lead-up to this Sunday's episode, Fox has released three new clips from The Simpsons/Futurama crossover. Watch the "Simpsorama" opening above, and a clip featuring Homer and Bart in the 30th century below.
Entertainment Weekly has another clip from the episode that you can watch on their site that shows Bender rummaging around in the Simpsons' basement.
Just how Bender comes to Springfield and how the Simpsons get to the future is unclear, but the episode's premise sheds some light on why the two are meeting in the first place:
…a complex, ‘Terminator’-esque story that involves Bart blowing his nose on a sandwich that he places in a time capsule. When that mixes with Milhouse’s rabbit’s foot and some radioactive ooze, it creates a global catastrophe in the future, prompting Bender to travel back in time to kill Bart and prevent this mega-mess.
The opening credits for "Simpsorama" will blend both show's openings, including the tagline from Futurama - "A show out of ideas teams up with a show out of episodes" - and The Simpsons' famous couch gag.
This crossover episode will be absolutely brimming with Easter eggs like these for fans to spot, as well as plenty of jokes made over the fact that both series' come from the same creative team. For example, The Simpsons' executive producer Al Jean shared, "We do a joke, actually, about how similar Bender and Homer look. Like, they just erased Homer’s hair."
