A causing character deaths in The Sims is a common pastime in the game for many players, as there are a myriad of creative ways Sims can die. Despite being released seven years ago, The Sims 4's players are still making new discoveries about the game.
Since its release, The Sims 4 has added new ways for Sims to die with every expansion pack. Currently, there are over 20 different causes of death offered by the series as a whole - everything from typical causes of death like drowning to stranger causes like killer rabbits. The Grim Reaper has always been an iconic character in The Sims series, arriving to reap the souls of Sims after they've met their demise. Not only can he be bargained with and befriended, The Sims 4's Reaper can be romanced as well.
Reddit daniellebuilds discovered a new detail about the Grim Reaper this week after their Sim perished in the ocean and the Reaper showed up wearing goggles. The way he arrives at the scene almost necessitates the goggles - at least when ignoring the fact that Grim is a skeleton. He rises up from the depths of the ocean to reap the Sim's soul and disappears the same way after the job is done, surrounded by blackened waters.
While drowning in The Sims series is considered one of the most well-known deaths, with a common meme being removing pool ladders so Sims cannot escape, this instance of drowning is more unique than most. Even with the many ways characters can die in The Sims 4, the Grim Reaper's actions usually remain the same. In most cases after a Sim's death, the process the Grim Reaper goes through to reap their soul is more time consuming: typically, Grim will appear to enter several details on a tablet in a business-like manner before finishing the job. With this locale the shorter reaping makes sense - although an animation of the Grim Reaper treading water would be hilarious in its own right, this brief dive in and out of the water has its own entertainment value.
Whether intentionally caused by players or not, death is an integral part of the Sims universe and history. Players have discovered a lot about the Grim Reaper and amusing ways for Sims to perish over the years, but it's clear with events like this that there are still new things to discover. Small, surprising details like this are a perfect example of why players continue to return to The Sim 4 this many years after its release.
