EA's The Sims franchise is celebrating its 21st birthday this year. The venerable life-simulation series has become a tentpole of the video game industry. It's one of the most successful products of all time, both in of commercial sales and fan satisfaction. A driving force behind that success are the constant stream of expansions that inject new content into each base game. But which Sims game has the most DLC?
The Sims was released way back in 2000. It made an immediate impact and quickly rose to be the best-selling PC game of all time - a record that has since been broken. Maxis quickly cemented its reputation for providing post-launch content by releasing seven expansion packs for The Sims. The Makin' Magic expansion introduced spells and (obviously) magic to the game, making the life-sim a little more fantastical. And, speaking of the fantastic, the House Party expansion introduced comic actor Drew Carey to the game.
The second mainline game, The Sims 2, hit shelves in 2004 and was similarly buttressed by post-launch DLC. Eight expansion packs were released, along with nine stuff packs. Stuff packs were (and are, as they continue to be in-use today) smaller packages of items that do not alter gameplay much. Things like new clothes and holiday décor can come in The Sims' stuff packs. A standout from this group of DLC has to be The Sims 2: Bon Voyage. That expansion added in vacations, as well as Bigfoot - a fuzzy cryptid who should be game.
Sims Games Get More DLC As They Go On
Five years after the second Sims game dropped, The Sims 3 hit the scene. Over the course of its life, The Sims 3 saw eleven expansion packs and nine stuff packs. That is a lot of DLC. From the mystical creatures of Supernatural to the much more mundane cats and dogs of Pets, the expansions for The Sims 3 catered to a wide range of playstyles and tastes.
The current Sims game, The Sims 4, is seven years old at this point. There have been some growing pains - like originally not being able to terraform lots - but, for the most part, the game is in a very good place. A major reason for this improvement since launch has been the battery of DLC that has been made available. There are a staggering 10 expansion packs, nine game packs, and 17 stuff packs available to players. Getting all of this release of The Sims 5.
