It was apparent in the early seasons of Kody has pretty good interpersonal skills since he communicates with many different spouses on a daily basis. Kody is also surrounded by 18 children, all with different temperaments. This led many to assume Kody can get along with pretty much anyone.

The theory was proven wrong when Christine and Kody's daughter Mykelti introduced her choice of a future spouse. From the get-go, Kody seemed standoffish, as viewers wondered why he didn't approve of his daughter's union. Tony was only the second in law to marry into the Brown family. However, viewers couldn't help but notice the friction between the two men when they were forced to interact.

Mykelti was only 20 years old when she married Tony. The young age would scare any parent since marriage is such a big commitment. The biggest issue Kody seemed to have with the marriage was the fact that Tony was immature, with the patriarch claiming the couple didn't understand how real life worked. At the time of the wedding, many Sister Wives viewers felt Tony was acting entitled, but in reality, he was trying his best to stand up for his future wife. The main source of contention between the two men seemed to circle around a comment made about taking out a second mortgage on the home after Kody revealed he was worried about paying for two weddings. At the time, Tony told the cameras, “I really don’t know what Kody means by ‘it would clobber him.’ I guess financially — but there’s a way around that. I mean, you can get a loan against your house."

Tony received a lot of backlash for the comment, but it turns out he was making a well-placed dig at Kody. During a live Q&A that took place years ago, Tony revealed Kody was being hypercritical since he told his in-laws at the time of his first marriage to take out a mortgage to pay for him and Meri to marry. To make matters even worse, Kody didn't pay for either Mykelti or Maddie's weddings; TLC split the bill noting the couple was given a budget, and Tony paid the excess out of his savings. Tony, who seemed to understand the game, revealed he was happy to make sly digs at Kody's expense since his father-in-law wasn't practicing what he preached.

In the end, Kody's reason for not liking Tony is essentially void. If Kody was upset about the couple's lack of maturity when it came to handling money, he should have also been upset with Aspyn and Mitch, who had their wedding paid for by TLC as well. Maddie, Caleb, Robyn, and even Kody himself have benefited in similar ways, too. Kody once again looked like a huge hypocrite to Sister Wives viewers for trying to pick on his son-in-law when he was the one in the wrong.
