In season 16, however, viewers believe Kody's emotionally deceptive tactics have become more unhinged than ever before. Kody Scolds Meri Over His Rules

Sister Wives Kody and Meri Brown

Kody has been criticized for the strict guidelines he's tasked his polygamous family with following throughout the coronavirus pandemic in Sister Wives season 16. While some of Kody's rules like social distancing are useful in preventing the virus from spreading, fans find other instructions like showering after leaving the house to be unnecessary. On top of some impractical guidelines, Kody's protocol has been criticized by his first trio of wives because it has effectively relegated the patriarch to living a single-marriage life with Robyn and her kids throughout the pandemic. Because of this, Kody's wives and viewers have suggested that Robyn has played a part in the creation of the Brown family's COVID rules. No one voiced this take until Meri made a joke at a meeting about the protocol and made a comment about Kody's guidelines actually being Robyn's rules. Kody swiftly made Meri feel guilty for this quip.

Meri insisted that she was only joking about Robyn being behind the rules, but the polygamous pair were quick to onish the original sister wife for suggesting Robyn is behind Kody's restrictive protocol. Once she realized that Robyn and Kody were angry at her for teasing the happy couple, Meri became putty in their hands. Meri apologized profusely, but instead of accepting her sincere offering of remorse, Kody and Robyn opted to make their polygamous partner feel even worse by claiming that she was making the issue about herself. A scolding Meri for making a comment, Kody was successful in diverting his wives from bringing up their valid criticism of the patriarch's controversial COVID protocol.

Christine and Kody's relationship has been on the brink of collapse for years but one conflict that fans agree expedited Christine's decision to end her marriage with the patriarch polygamist was his hands-off approach to their daughter, Ysabel's, spine surgery. Ysabel has suffered from scoliosis for the past handful of Sister Wives seasons, but Christine and Kody struggled to find a fix for their daughter's back ailment. The pair attempted to solve the curve in Ysabel's spine through any means necessary other than surgery. Kody asserted that he didn't want Ysabel to undergo a back operation because he didn't want her body scarred by surgeons. Although Kody didn't want his daughter's appearance blemished, Ysabel's curved spine caused severe pain Christine couldn't ignore. The sister wife tried to work around Kody's anti-surgery stance by g Ysabel up for a camp that treated scoliosis patients, but nothing cured the Brown child.

Ultimately, Christine decided there was no other option and scheduled Ysabel a spine surgery. Although this was the best course of action, Kody wasn't pleased with Christine's decision. Aside from his fears that surgery would make Ysabel less attractive, Kody didn't want any of his family traveling to New Jersey during the pandemic. Kody's enacted strict quarantine rules to prevent the spread of the virus and traveling across the country certainly contradicted his protocol. Christine asserted that Ysabel's back needed to be treated because it was causing her pain, but Kody demonstrated little sympathy. On top of not offering to accompany his daughter during her intimidating operation, Kody even suggested Christine allow Ysabel to travel to New Jersey on her own. Fans found Kody manipulative when he tried to downplay Christine and Ysabel's urgent trip to New Jersey by referring to it as a "vacation."

Kody's "Bitter Housewife" Comment

Unfortunately, Kody's calculated comments didn't stop with the reality star attempting to minimize the severity of Ysabel's surgery. Understandably, Ysabel's feelings were hurt when her father wasn't as ive as he could've been during her daunting spine surgery. Kody demonstrated his inclination for manipulation when he compared his daughter to a "bitter housewife." Before she left for the Garden State, Kody implored Ysabel not be come back mad at him for abandoning her during her back surgery and requested that she doesn't return resentful of him like one of his sister wives. Fans found this to be a manipulative tactic to control his daughter's emotions. Instead of apologizing to Ysabel or trying to understand why she would be upset with her father for not being there for her, Kody asserted that any negative response from his daughter would turn her into a "bitter housewife."

 The Sister Wives' "Little World"

Janelle Brown is typically one of Kody's most ardent ers, but throughout the coronavirus pandemic, the polygamist's second wife has spoken out against her husband. Specifically, Janelle is frustrated with Kody's restrictive quarantine guidelines because they've resulted in the Brown family rarely spending time together. Because her children haven't managed to follow all of Kody's rules, Janelle was put in the uncomfortable situation of picking between spending Thanksgiving with her kids or with Kody. While trying to convince his wives that he knows best for the polygamous clam, Kody asserted, "You can continue in the vein of your little world." Viewers were quick to note that Kody dismissing his wives' worlds as small is an effective way to make his partners feel less valuable. Fortunately, Janelle pointed out Kody's manipulative tactic and accused him of guilt-tripping the Sister Wives family.
