Warning! This article contains major spoilers for She-Hulk's season finale. The She-Hulk: Attorney at Law season finale introduced Skaar to the MCU, Bruce Banner's son, promising big things for the MCU's future involving the Hulk family. The show's finale was a meta, fourth-wall-breaking ride through Marvel Studios' past, present, and future, with the ending scene providing the most hints of the latter through Hulk and Skaar. As Jen decides how her own show goes by talking with KEVIN, an AI robot at the head of Marvel Studios who was only missing Feige's signature cap, she fails to foresee the introduction of Skaar to her family dinner.
As Jen sits down for a barbecue with her family, and the returning Matt Murdock, both she and the audience get a big surprise with Hulk showing back up. Hulk states that he has been off-world on Sakaar, the planet he spent years on between Avengers: Age of Ultron and Thor: Ragnarok. Bruce also reveals that, during this time, his then-alter ego managed to birth a son named Skaar, who is introduced to Jen, Matt, and the rest of the Walters family.
Who Is Skaar?
Not a lot of Skaar is known in of the MCU, as his brief cameo in She-Hulk is the first mention or sighting of him. As of the She-Hulk finale, it is unclear whose Skaar's other parent is and how long Bruce has known about him. It can be inferred from She-Hulk's first episode that the Sakaaran ship that caused Jen to crash and subsequently become She-Hulk was sent by Skaar, as the young Hulkling figured out his father's whereabouts. This then caused Hulk to return to Sakaar, coming back to Earth with his son in tow. The introduction of Skaar is not just something for the MCU, however, and the character is taken straight out of the comics. Skaar's comic history will likely be included in its own movie, with a seemingly throwaway line hinting that this will happen, likely based on the Planet Hulk storyline that introduced Skaar for Marvel Comics.
Skaar Powers & Comic Book History
Skaar's powers are similar to that of the Hulk in the comics, with the character inheriting his father's strength, durability, stamina, and senses that come from being a Hulk. Like the Hulk, Skaar's powers become stronger with anger. However, differently to Bruce, Skaar obtained some powers from his mother. These powers include the ability to manipulate lava and stone through something called Old Power. Skaar got these from Caiera, his mother, whom Hulk met during the Planet Hulk storyline, currently foreshadowed in the MCU.
Caiera was the bodyguard of a character named the Red King who ruled Sakaar. Upon Hulk's banishment from Earth and subsequent landing on Sakaar, he was taken captive by the Red King and forced to fight in a gladiatorial arena. Eventually, Hulk and his allies, including the Silver Surfer, escaped and began waging war on the Red King. Eventually, Caiera defected to the Hulk's side after the Red King unleashed the Spikes on his army, a race of creatures that attacked Caiera's village when she was a child. Hulk, Caiera, and their army attack the Sakaaran capital, which results in a one-on-one fight between Hulk and Red King, with the latter being defeated. Hulk is named the King of Sakaar and he and Caiera get married, resulting in the birth of Skaar.
Shortly after his birth, Caiera was killed in an explosion caused by the shuttle that brought Hulk to Sakaar, leading the Hulk to return to Earth in vengeance in the World War Hulk storyline. Skaar, however, was born on Sakaar and matured rapidly after his birth. Skaar was then raised by the planet's inhabitants, quickly becoming an adept fighter and master swordsman. Skaar went to war with characters such as Axeman Bone, eventually becoming consumed with anger and revenge at his enemies. Through a whole series of events that saw Sakaar consumed by Galactus, Skaar was exiled to Earth and became hellbent on killing his father. Eventually though, Banner manages to mold his son into a hero, with Skaar becoming a frequent protector of Earth.
Who Plays Skaar In The MCU
Although not easy to recognize, actor Wil Deusner plays Skaar in She-Hulk season 1, episode 9. Deusner is perhaps best known for playing the character Joey Zarick in DC's Stargirl, while his other credits TV show Shut Eye and movie Son of the South. Playing Hulk's son Skaar in the MCU is one of Deusner's biggest roles to date (and not just literally), and with the setup in She-Hulk he should go on to even greater things.
When Did Hulk Have A Son In The MCU? And How?
The likely answer of when Hulk had a son in the MCU is during his time on Sakaar between Age of Ultron and Ragnarok. Banner was on the planet Sakaar for over two years purely as the Hulk until Thor found him as the Grandmaster's champion. While Thor: Ragnarok included some aspects of the Planet Hulk storyline, such as Hulk becoming a gladiator on Sakaar, many aspects were changed to fit the MCU. Firstly, there was no Red King with Jeff Goldblum's Grandmaster being Sakaar's ruler for the MCU. Also, there was no mention of Caiera or any hint that Hulk had any romantic partners during his time on Sakaar. Despite this, much of Hulk's time on Sakaar was not featured, with Ragnarok only showing the Hulk in his final few days on the planet. It is not a leap in logic to assume that, in the two years prior to this, Hulk had a son with someone on Sakaar. Whether that turns out to be Caiera remains to be seen, though it is likely that Hulk's return to Sakaar between the She-Hulk premiere and the finale will adapt Planet Hulk much more closely and explain everything about Skaar's MCU origins.
Skaar's Future In The MCU
This adaptation, which is certainly possible in the future given that Marvel retains the rights of the Hulk's distribution from Universal in 2023, will likely be the next time Skaar is seen in the MCU timeline. After all, Hulk simply turning up out of the blue in the She-Hulk finale with a son in tow was even the subject of a joke from Jen, with her stating she wants to see what happens. This, alongside the other hints at a potential Planet Hulk adaptation that is more akin to the comic story, hints that Marvel Studios are indeed planning to show exactly what Bruce got up to in space, as well as Skaar's origins. Whether Skaar turns up in future movies or shows that take place after She-Hulk: Attorney at Law remains to be seen, however his most likely next appearance will come in a project that tells of Bruce's unexpected return to Sakaar.
